I'm new here and I have a few problems on my '92 explorer....
1. Interior lights will not turn off regaurdless of either closing all doors or switching off dash switch. I have checked every door jam switch and the dash switch itself. I'm guessing its a bad ground but where do I look?
2. The CD player plays the CD's but the song comes out with alot of static. I know it might be shot but i thought i'd give it a try:)
3. The RPM gauge is sittin at 3 grand all day. I whacked it hard and it went back to normal for a day. Now it's doin it again.
Thanks guys!

1. Have you checked the rear lift gate? There is a switch back there as well.
2. haven't a clue.
3. Sound like you need to replace the gauge, or atleast check for a loose wire behind it.

yes, i have checked the gate also. sorry i forgot to mention that.

Well this happened in my wifes XLT and it was a bad headlight switch. As soon as I disconnected the plug on the back of it the lights went out. Try to check it out. You will have to remove the dash if I remember right. It was pretty easy only took a few minutes.

1) the dome lights are probably the headlight switch, as already suggested.

2) is the static only from one speaker, or do all of them sound bad? Try to isolate each speaker one by one and then stick play them all and sit in each seat to see what you hear.

3) If it went back to normal with that whack then it's either hte gauge or it's wiring, as suggested.

I have also already checked the headlight switch for the dome light problem. I only have static when i play CDs. I have tryed to use different CDs but the same problem exsists.

Does the door trigger have 12v+ until door closes then grounds out? If so then just unscrew the door trigger and test them for power when plunger is pushed in. There has to be a wire crossing into the wires for dome light that is supplying the 12v+ to keep them on if the door triggers are doing their job and grounding the wire out. It seems to me that there was only 1 wire going to the door trigger. I removed mine just a week ago.

Does the HU play non-static music in am-fm mode?

1- pull the fuse (just kidding, i actually thought it was your rear hatch untill you said otherwise)
2- sounds like your CD player might need to be cleaned. my JVC was doing the same thing and i had it cleaned and now its fine
3- My tach was doing the same thing, except it was stuck at zero. Go to a junkyard and get another one, it just plugs into the dash, and there are no wires to mess with. it cost me like 5 bucks. You gotta pull the dash apart, which is really no big deal, just kinda time consuming. Good luck!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! yes the FM and AM radio works fine and dandy. I did get a cleaner CD which did nothing for the problem.

Well if the radio works just fine without static then its the player. That was easy. Get a new deck.

thats what i was hoping to avoid considering summer is comin up and the monte is comin out. I was just wondering if anyone has actually had and fixed that problem with the cd player
