But my explorer sounds like it is. I really hope it isn't

Its a 99 Explorer, 4 Door, Manual Transmission, AWD, OHV (Vin X), with 86K

At a low idle, you hear a roar, a knocking type sound coming from somewhere inside the engine. It sounds like a diesel if I had to describe it to someone.

I first noticed it after I did an oil change, I used 5W-30, because thats what it recommends. After I heard the noise, I drained that and used 10W-40 hoping that it would thickin things up and eat away the nosie. Must have been a coincidence that it started right after because the noise was still there. I dont hear it under accelleration, just at and idle. If you pull the IAC wires and let the RPM's really come down, it sounds like a small diesel car.

So I took it in to KC Martin, they told me most likely a timing chain raddle. So I hop on here do the search and come up with bookoo results for the SOHC. seems as tho people forgot about the old OHV, but thats what I need some information on.

I did a quick glance at the hanes manual, they say to do a timing chain service you need to pull the entire engine. --- Me have not enough time for that. (If infact that is whats making the noise)

Could it just be simply a tensioner, does that not require removal of the entire engine? does the whole chain need to be replaced with other parts? what other essential information am I missing before go stuffing my hands down the front of the engine?

I've tryed other forums, particularly ford-trucks.com, geting minimal 1/2 baked awnsers from different people. I hope I came to the right place for some better ideas, suggestions and tips.

Please, if you have information on timing chain replacments/what needs to replaced for the sound to go away please let me know.
Thanks !

This may sound stupid, but a different oil filter on. Could be a faulty filter, especially if started right after the oil change. No need to change the oil again, just the filter. Also, make sure you don't have 2 gaskets on ithe filter Sometimes the old one will stay up on the housing.

Ah, I forgot to include that in my post. When I did the first oil change with 5w-30 I used fram, I jumped on here and found that's everyones least favorite brand, so when I put in 10w-30 I bought a Mobil 1 filter, thats on there now. I have both old filters, they both have their gaskets on them.
