1999 Explorer/1950 Fargo
Hello mutual enthusiasts!

I have waited nearly 4 years to actually start my 1950 Fargo frame swap project.

I chose utilizing a 1999 Explorer XLT (we have TWO, the other is a 1999 XLS), this was thought to be our backup parts car for the other XLS.

Anyway, the '99 XLT is a complete drive-able 4x4 with approx. 230,000k. While everything is mechanically sound, it suffered a minor RT sideswipe, so that both RT doors are damaged. Usual wear & tear inside and out.

However, after much thinking, I decided to build a Rat Rod/Street Rod combo. This could potentially morph into a daily driver too at some point.

I have already started dismantling the nose of the explorer yesterday.

see this Dropbox link to photos... https://www.dropbox.com/l/sh/xyJbBzsxG7XexEMBnUpSNq

I have taken some early crude measurements determining the frame rail widths and wheelbases, etc. The Fargo is within 1/2" on frame rail, whereas, the Fargo's tires center to center are about 3" wider believe it or not. This is why I chose the explorer over full Mopar using a roll-over Dakota solution.

Now I come to asking for some knowledge. The explorer engine options were 4.0L pushrod/4.0 SOHC (that's what I have!), or a 5.0L. What transmission options do I have? I assume I have a 4R55 behind my 4.0 SOHC, but can I get or use a 5R55e, or can I swap the SOHC to a 5.0?

By building the rod initially with the '99 XLT stock everything, could I later swap out the 4.0 SOHC for a 5.0?

Dave, the RatFRAUD guy.

Welcome, sounds like a cool project, but what is a Fargo??

Fargo et al

A Fargo is Canada's carbon copy of the Dodge, made in Canada, differing mainly in trim level, emblems, etc.

I once owned a 1957 Fargo one ton tow truck too! My current 1950 Fargo is already a hotrod, but about 30 years ago, a 305/307 Chevy coupled to a Turbo 350, and a 9" Ford rear end.

I'm doing a full restore.

Cheers,
Dave

I can't help you with your questions, but I moved this into Gen 2 modified section where you should get some answers.

Thanks bud, I did not know that as yet!

The 4.0 OHV is fairly gutless with limited aftermarket suport.

The 4.0 OHC makes much better power but has a problematic cam drive and again, limited aftermarket suport.

The 5.0 sbf (302 Windsor) has widespread support, good oem power with plenty more available. The Explorer spec 4R70W transmission is widely regarded as Ford's best rwd auto box. Couple that with a '96/'97 Explorer efi system and you've got a package that's hard ro beat for the money.

That said is 4r70w 4WD or only RWD? Would the VIN help I'd the pwr train? What models should I look for or VIN# Supporting a 5.0?

In the Explorer the 4R70W was available in both rwd and awd set ups. In the F150, rwd or 4wd. Same transmission for 4wd or awd, just different transfer cases.

In '98 when Ford added PATS and the external EGR, they also changed the wiring of the 4R70W.

Welcome.

Someone here did an f100 swap. I think it will be a cool project. Keep us posted when this gets going.

Yes Yes, I found it today and reviewed ever single photo he ("Buddy") made. It was a 56 Ford F100 over a '99 Explorer.

Mine is exactly the same project, same blue colored donor too!

He managed to fit all the wiring, dash, aircon, fuses, ABS, cruise, pretty much everything.

In addition, I want to go a step further with trim panels inside the cab. I have already lined up the right hand door. This will give the cab comports of power windows and potentially powered mirrors. But his 56 Ford cab appears wider than my 50 Fargo/Dodge.

I am soliciting a new name for it too. I thought of Forgo (Ford & Fargo), my son thought "FarGone"; I'll take suggestions.

Why can't I post pics into here?

There's a couple stickied threads at the top of the new members section, you can read up on picture posting. Basically, link from another site, or become an elite member here for $20.

Looking forward to following your project:chug:

I do enjoy looking at vintage rides of all types, but I tend to stop and check out ones that are unusual/rare/unique ones.

This one fits in that category. I'll keep checking in on this. Best of luck
