A while ago I was telling you guys about a clunk type sound i had whenever i gave my X throttle in reverse.

Well she has graduated beyond that now and no longer does it. Heres the latest, for a day all she did if she was turned off....once you started her and put her in gear, without touching the gas she would idle forward as normal only that she seemed to stutter...then very shortly after she would completely die (stall)

no problems in starting her, even in neutral. this happened in reverse and in overdrive or regular drive.

if she survived the initial stuttering you could drive her all day without any problems, even switch from reverse to drive, which ever you want.

EDIT: it definitely feels like a drivetrain engaging issue

i think it might be the tranfer case....any other ideas out there?

thanks,

leo

are you in 4x4 when this is happenning? cant think of why it might be the tcase if th emotor is shutting off. sound sliek your fuel is shutting off if you are able to start everytime.

The shuttering could be coming from the engine gasping for the right fuel/air mixture. It can be mistaken for a driveline issue as it is real pronounced, but will go away once the truck warms up. My wife's Volvo had the same problem. The solution was to clean the MAS and throttle body then reset the cpu by disconnecting the battyer for 10 minutes.

i agree... sounds like the problem i had with my mud covered maf sensor.... cleaned it of with carb cleaner and it ran fine....

well shes not in 4x4 when it happens, and only one day she had done it. it really seemed it was something mechanically wrong with the drivetrain but i'll take your guys' words on it since she hadn't done it since.

the clunking i was getting in reverse when you blipped the throttle has dissappeared and i have no idea why.

the guys at ford got me to go in drive and reverse both in 2wd and in 4wd while watching the truck from underneath and they are pretty sure its the transfer case, but that was when she was making the clunking.

why in the heck did she stop doing it altogether? what happens when the transfer case finally goes?

thanks guys,

leo

btw: the explorer ROCKS on vacation, my steel horse roof rack got quite some use :)

Definately clean the MAS (if you haven't already). My '93 used to do the exact same thing you described until I cleaned mine and it hasn't acted up since then.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Oh yeah, don't forget to reset the computer or it will not change anything.

Mine does, err did the same clunking noise. Kind of a PING! I am not sure what it is but I am getting new greaseable u-joints (only about 13 bones) soon.

Could be temperature, spirratic grease intolerances, intolerances in the u-joint itsself where it may get PINGY. I am totally clueless as well.

I just want to see if the new u-joints will cause it to cease. Also when in 4Low it is really pronounced, when it happens... I just do that...and my girlfriend looks at me like "Are we going to be okay and be able to get out of here?"
