hmmm, its obviously a bushing of some sort. I don't know which though. Were all the clearances checked when the transmission was put back together?

I haven't started doing mine yet, but I'm sure I have case bushings like that among my parts. Those are likely the bushings that could go in the case at the rear, or one of the drums or pump. The builder should have looked carefully at all parts which were not replaced. Damaged bushings or scored hard parts are common future failures.

If the old trans was not burned up, then likely those bushings are okay. Ask the builder if he/she recalls looking at the bushings inside of the case and parts. Regards,

Glove box parts. They go in the glove box. ;)

I couldn't be any practical help, so I thought some humor might be useful :)

I would agree that they appear to be bushings of some sort though... Couldn't tell you where they're from... But I'm curious.

The long bushing appears to be for the tail housing on a 2WD. If you have 4WD, it's extra and wouldn't be used. If that is indeed the tail shaft bushing...

The other could be the front pump bushing. Now, that too could be extra if they put a new front pump in the trans...it would come with one. But if they missed it, that's not good because that is one bushing that does indeed wear and will allow a leak past the front seal. If that indeed is the front pump bushing...

I'm probably no help at all am I!

Okay so the obvious...they are bushings...Thank you. Now, the not so obvious...I did the tear down with my boyfriend and we don't remember taking anything like these out of the transmission. We DID NOT take apart the rear. And we DID NOT take apart the pump. As soon as we took all the gears out we noticed some friction plates were burned up, so that was the obvious reason why it was slipping. We replaced those and then put everything back together. Me, being a woman, bagged and wrote on everything we took out, unless it was an obvious part like the bell housing for instance. It's all buttoned up and ready to go back in the Explorer, however...again being a woman, I see extra parts, I'm kind of flipping out.

What would you do?

Quick Question, in the rebuild kit, would they stick them in the bag with all the rubber seals or taped to the box with the friction plates? Possible bushing in the middle of the friction plates that were wrapped by the tension bands. That might have been how I took it out. Mind you, my very first rebuild of a transmission, so I didn't exactly know what to do. (Again, this is Mikey's girlfriend.)

Don't stress about these parts. The old bushings are still in the same place as they were in before you started. Not every rebuild kit comes with bushings, and not every transmission needs new bushings. How many miles did it have on it before you rebuilt it?

Over 100,000 miles. It was stolen and parked somewhere. Our guess is because they toasted the tranny. I really think, after all this, that those are the new one to replace to old ones. It never leaked or anything. We just had to replace to friction plates.

Along with everyone else, they are all correct these are the new bushings, if you wanted to you could change out the old ones and have these new ones put in. (This would have to be done with a press, not just tapping these in).
If when you rebuilt the tranny and didn't have any leaks and no reason to replace them you are good to go. Congrats on being willing to get dirty and learn first hand.
My buddy gave me the info on this so i am not due any credit!

Thank you everybody that replied. The tranny is in the truck and it drives ok. The problem i am having now is when the tranny shifts it is very lite, so lite you cant feel it shift. I am thinking that it is the bands are not adjusted properly. I am going to atempt to adjust them tomorrow. If someone has any other ideas on why it is shifting so lite or how i can get it to shift properly please chime in.

Thank you all again.

Mike

When you get to this part i would suggest that you lubricate any and all pivot points on any linkage or cables (preventative care). Be sure to check manufacture specs on the bands and that should wrap it up. Just be glad it's not something else. You shouldn't have to remove the tranny for this either. You might be able to find some info here:

If the mods think that this link is against the rules please remove it or just send me a message i will gladly remove it.

why did the trans fail originally?

were there metal particles in the oil?

if so were all the valves in the valvebody removed one by one and blown out with brake clean and the passages?

if it has the 5r whatever V6 trans does it have a vacumm modulator or is it fully electronic, beats me I only dealt with A4LDSs( maybe low line pressure), but if it doesnt flare/slip between shifts its fine.
