Hey guys,
I am running into a serious lack of patience problem here...

I have my 5.5" lift in the garage waiting to be installed. Here's the problem - lack of cash to re-gear, buy tires and rims, or lockers. I can install the lift, but will have the 31" Mud Rovers on for probably 6-8 weeks beyond installation. Should I go ahead and install it anyway knowing it will look a bit odd with the smaller tires?

You have lived with it this long the way it is, why not wait. Plus, I have found that when doing things like this, you often break a few parts or find some others that need replacement and you will have to replace them too. You don't want to get involved in something and have to leave the Ex on blocks til you can afford to fix it.

There's my 2 cents(not worth much in US funds).

Jon-

sounds like the bug took a CHUNK out of your rear! if i was you, i would install lift now for 2 reasons:

1) it's going to be a GREAT learning experience. it's not hard but you can into some hairy problems. if you install the lift now, you can fix any bugs and be ready for the new tires and gears. plus, by installing each individual mod, you can narrow down problems WAY easier than if you through them all on at once.

2)IT WILL KEEP YOU SYKED UP TO FINISH THE REST!!!!!!!!!!!

when i did my bronco, i had to run on my stock 31's for 3 months before i could get my tires. wanna talk aboiut stupid looking? but the only good thing is, everybody who sees you, knows you've got tires on the way. so, it's no big deal

good luck on the rest- russel

p.s.- beware: you may get a real louder humming if you add your lift and not larger tires. i don't have a clue what it is from, but my bronco did it bad until i added some 35's.

hey Jon, I got a great idea...We'll put it on mine....hehe. Wait man, do it right to start with.. You'll be happier than if it is sitting around undrivable..That happened to me with my pickup the last time I wrecked it.It sucks seeing your baby just set there, soon you begin to lose hope, then depression sits in....hehe..

so Mike,
Are you saying wait or do the lift 1st...
I'M SO CONFUSED!!!!

J

Wait on more funds

I installed my lift and had to run around with 31s for awhile. Don' t do this. It looks soooooo stupid.

Luckily a buddy donated his old 33" muds to me...

Wait untill you at least have the funds to re-do your gearing. I hated having 3.55's with 33's. It sucked!

It's close guys - this isn't helping my indecision any ;)

J

if it was me....RAISE IT BABY!!!! hehe, but that's just me..

I'd say wait and do it all at once. I dont know how many people I see changing what they just did and tossing money out the door. It's better to do it once than to do it wrong. I of all people should know this. I've had the money several times.....but no lift. I know what I want and I'll keep working till I get it. :)

Hi Jon
YOU ARE ALREADY DEPRESSED! Put the darn suspension on you need to see it on and drive it! ONLY, IF you can afford the alignment before driving it. You need to feel the set up even with the 31's. WHY? Because, I think you didn't buy it JUST for looks. Besides that will come when the tires arrive later! You need some compensation NOW. So step on UP into your Explorer now besides, your looking from the driver's seat. IT will look MUCH better from there even now! just my 2 cents/ good luck either way.
Besides it will be one less thing you'll have to do later. :' )
Steve

Steve,
Alignment is no problem. My concern is I want to do everything at once - however, from the "ask the audience" lifeline, it looks like I will be doing the lift in about 2 weeks (when I have time)

Thanks for all the input...

Jon

Of course as of now, the vote is 9-9... This group is just as indecisive as I am ;)

Jon

if walking into your garage everyday and seeing that lift just sit there pains you?! Then put it on. I have a total of 6inches of lift and running 31's it might look funny, but I am still higher than those stocks trucks i pass ;o). And i agree with some other guys, you will always run into problems and fixes, i know i did. I feel it is better to do one job at a time and then work out the bugs according to each aftermarket part. Plus i have always seen that doing everything at once is just longer and longer a truck sits while they have to get everything right. And in my case, i get confused looking at more than one instruction manual at a time. Just do it buddy, it will be a sense of accomplishment to watch the truck progress over time.

i wouldn't do for one wait till uhave the money and for two u already have a 3 inch body lift and if u d0o the lift u will have 9 inches of lift with 31's it won't look "nice"

Jon; have you ever done something you knew you were going to add to later, and once you got started you felt a sense of accomplishment? I say lift it, take some pictures, get all the bugs out of it, and then move on with the wheels/tires. Not that it applies; but, often you can do too many mods at once, and never appreciate each one for what it is worth by itself... build it, and appreciate your work in progress.cheers, becker.

Becker,
Fine words my man! There would be a bunch more pride to do lots of projects instead of just 1... The wheels are turning....

J

I say return it for a Skyjacker;) But at the least, wait till ya got everything else.
Pete

Pete - can't swap for a skyjacker for 2 reasons:
1) everything was used and cheap ;)

2) why bother - chances are I'll go to a dana 44 within a year. I can't stand the thought of being behind the times with all you guys... anyhow - I should have never asked the quetions - everytime I come back, I get more and more confused... HELP ME PLEASE! THe men in the white jackets are coming for me - I'll see you later...

John, just think of it as that the men with white jackets are from Ford's Technical Division, it's all good; they are here to "help You". Relax, and besides don't worry about being behind anyone else's modifications or personal choices, go out and bead blast your explorer if you are this excited :) Get under your truck with a light and a "fine tooth comb" and look at your options, your truck and your heart will tell you if you want to jump into the work now or not or wait on $$. If you are dying to put tool to truck and work on it, then do it... aesthetics work out in time, and if you consider (and I appologize to go at length) appreciation for a job well done and completed correctly, than maybe you should install now.... just some thoughts, cheers, becker.
