1. How reliable is the electronic 4wd system used on Explorers in deep mud and water.

2. Is a lock in 4wd systems with hubs better, such as older 4x4s'.

3. On one occasion my 4x4 clicked out in a muddy field, could this quite possibly be bad?

The reason I ask these questions is because im not tring to break my X 4 miles in the hickville woods with on 1 way out through streams and deep bogs, the way i came in.

Lastly I have one more thing to add in, I was driving down the road one day and there was a deep water puddle, so i rip through it and water went everywhere, including somewhere it shouldnt have and thats the question I'm asking. I expienced a reasonably power loss that slowed me down but not entirely. Sooner or later i regained full power but I am stilled baffled to exactly what happen. Did water get in my intake/exhausts?

The 4WD system is very good, however the auto hubs not NOT. I would replace them with manual ones which are cheaper and a LOT better. Is the clicking repeating? Or is it just one click?

I'm not too sure what you mean about the lock in older hubs. You have hubs, they are just autos.

The water most likely went up your intake which would explain the power loss. Then it probably evaporated or something.

I believe he is asking if manual hubs are better than our automatic hubs and the answer would be yes. Manual hubs are better for heavy offroading.

Oh, ok. Yes, go with manuals.

Sorry to jump into your post, but does this Manual hub replacement also pertain to 95+?

I have a 96, are they redesinged for these years, or do they still suck?

Thanks

NO.

The IFS/4x4 system is completely different in the '95+ and up, and much much stouter than the autohubs. Your front end is alway turning, but your '96 also includes the vacuum disconnect on the front differential so your driveshaft does not turn 100% of the time. That was changed in '97 when the entire front driveline turns at all times. 4x4 power is applied via a clutch in the t/f case.

I knew manual hubs are better i just ment in older 4x4s', when i said it clicked out of 4x4 i ment it went to to 2wd, there was no actually"clicking" such as when you engage 4x4 mode there is a clicking sound. Actalu i am in the process of getting new hubs a u joints.
