I managed to pull the SOHC motor in a '99 Explorer 4x4 I bought for parts. I was thinking of rebuilding it and keeping it for my '01 2WD Explorer when that motor gives out. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would, and nothing was easy!! I get it pulled, and I need a $300 engine service kit to take it apart. UGH!!!
Now someone told me that there were differences between the 2x4 and 4x4 engines and that they can't mix. I'll admit I'm an older mechanic, I'm not used to newer vehicles. But I think I bit off more than I can chew here.

The 4x4 engine has a balance shaft and the 2wd engine doesn't. It doesn't seem to make much difference though. Many have installed the engine w/out the balance shaft in a 4x4 w/out any issues and there's no reason one with the balance shaft won't work in a 2wd.

You should be able to borrow the SOHC service kit from most auto parts stores. I won't buy one.
