2004 Explorer Limited 4.6
I already have a 2004 Ford Explorer Limited V8 & really love it. We also "TOAD" it behind our motorhome. Due to medical/mobility problems, we will be selling our 2002 VW Jetta TDI which we also TOAD behind the motorhome and want to replace the Jetta with a Sports Trac. So I am in the market for a Sports Trac.

The Sports Trac must have:
1. 4 WD so a Neutral Tow Kit Can be added/installed (2003 thru 2010).
2. Must be a "Limited" model (Explorer Spoiled us).

With the above in mind, are their model years to prefer & years to avoid?????

John I had a 2008 Sport Trac, (I've owned 4 Explorer XLT's myself). It was the 6 cylinder model which I thought would be decent on gas but I averaged 19 mpg's. At the time I bought it I was recovering from a 2nd knee surgery and had to get rid of my 6spd manual car. I liked the explorer so this was a no brainer, (I thought). If I had to do it over again I would get either an 08 or 10 model. It would be leather, v8, and definitely be the adrenaline model in either black or red. I now have a 10 Maxima but every time I see a Sport Trac it makes me miss mine, because you can't off road in a Maxima.

I can't say there are any model years to avoid. About the only differences I see are on 07's - most (but not all) have a solid rear window, so if the center slider is important to you, look for a 08+. Also some don't like the interior front door pulls on the 2007.

In your searches you'll see some Limiteds that aren't all that well equipped. I saw a few with cloth interior, manual HVAC controls, no sunroof. Have seen XLT's with more options, and from what I've found, the XLT's had a better color selection. YMMV. Had to drive 1200 miles roundtrip to get the Limited I wanted, so good luck & take your time to find the perfect one.

Picked up a 2007 with 70K on the clock last Sunday in Sumner, WA. Dark Blue (color matches motorhome), V8, Nav, leather, etc. Just what we wanted & proably paid too much.

Good on ya for going for the v8, i don't even know why the truck was available with the v6 given its lackluster performance and economy.
