I picked up a new blower motor today since my original making god awful sounds when run on any other setting that high.

Well I tried to fix the original by greasing it a bit, didn't work. The after effects was the motor only worked when placed on the highest setting.

I get the new one today, install it, everything is connected up...still only works on High. What gives?

I tried swapping relays and I get the same results....any ideas?

Thanks,

leo

You might want to check the blower motor resistor to make sure that it isn't "open".

The blower motor resistor is just to the right of the back side of the blower motor, protruding into the evaporator area, when looking at it from under the hood. You probably had to unplug the wire harness running to it to back the blower motor out.

Unplug the resistor harness, remove the two screws that hold it in, and check it with an ohmmeter to see if it has infinite resistance (open) or, with it removed, plug the harness back into it and check for voltage passing through it with the blower switch in the various positions. WARNING - It gets hot so be careful if you try this.

EDIT - You should be able to find a pic in a Haynes manual.

blower moter

just changed my a couple of weeks ago, sounds to me like your problem is the switch inside the car. the selector for the fan motor. i bet changing it would solve your problem..:D

I second blazeys response

It is the resistor....the "greasing" you did to the old motor probably fried the resistor....When a resistor is bad, the fan only works on high, as the resistor is bypassed on high for full power anyways.....

The actual resistor is held to the housing with two bolts. You can't miss it.

yeah its not the switch i know that for sure.

but i'm gunna check that resistor tomorrow, its definitely fried.

FYI, the new ones from Ford are only 15 bucks or so... and they are made with reddish plastic.

Resitor huh. My brother 92 is doing the same thing. We thought it was his switch, just never have done anything about it. Nice know, anxious to see what happens when you get the new one in.

Happy trails!!

bump

Just thought i'd see if the resitor was your problem. Need to do this to my brothers, but just wanted to check first.

Yup it was the resistor. Got a new one from Ford and it works perfect now.

Good thanks, guess it wasn't hard to put in?

:fire: :fire: :fire: :fire:

When you remove the resistor check around inside the housing, under and around it

REMOVE ANY DEBRIS YOU SEE IN THERE !

I had a SMOLDERING FIRE in there caused by the hot resistor wire coming into contact with some dead leaves that had gotten sucked in there!

luckily it just smoldered and didn't flare up

It was unnerving to say the least seeing blue smoke coming out of my a/c vents
