Hello everyone,

I want to put a moonroof into my 1997 XLS, but worried about leaks. Anyone know any company that has a good reputation for installing off-market moonroofs? Should i even bother? Anything i should look out for? Any particular details I need to know? Help me out!! Thanks in advance!

When I was lookin to buy my X a moonroof was a 'must have'. The dealer was showing my one without a moonroof and said it would be cake to put one in. Also, my aunt had Ford put one in her limited and it looked great. I have no idea how much its costs, but it my be worth lookin into.

I've called a few places here (Illinois) a while back and most said around $1100 parts and labor.

search keyword about "moonroof". you'll find plenty of info. aftermarket moon/sun roof usually cost from $800-1200 installed. i almost put one in my truck, but I heard a lot of problems with the aftermarket ones. they tend to leak.

my cousin is a service manager at a really big dealership.. so he knows people around the business. He said he could hook me up with a moonroof for a good price ($900) if I wanted it. But heres the deal: if youre going to only keep the truck for a couple of years, get it.. you can sell it off just as it starts to leak, and it will leak. cutting out a part of the roof will lessen its structural integrity, and over time, the seals will become loose... letting water in.. Also, if leaves get in the tubes that they use to drain water away from the moonroof, it will flood, and ruin your headliner.

I totally agree with Steve, it weakens the roof. I spoke to a one-man company who installs moonroofs. He said that if I off-road my X at all, don't do it! The roof is the only thing keeping the ground off your head if you roll it, and its already weak as is. I've seen X's with factory moonroofs that have rolled and the roof is completely crushed right where the moonroof hole is, which is right over your head. That section of the roof where the moonroof is installed holds the majority of the roof up. Just pull your headliner and look at the cross members you would have to cut through and you will see what I mean. I have also seen moonroofs come out of their mounting due to extreme flex, which is not good (on my Dad's stock X with a factory installed moonroof).
