2013 Ford Explorer XLT
I have a 2013 XLT without a factory installed Moonroof. Now I am thinking about getting a Moonroof ... Is this something that the Dealer can do or do I need to look at 3rd party after-market installers...??

OMG, I can not imagine what would be involved to install a dual panel moon roof comparable to the factory unit, (if, indeed, it is even possible). It would have to be BIG $$$. One solution would be a single panel moon roof . I know of no dealers who do such a thing. They all ship that work out to local shops that specialize in that sort of customization. BTW, I do have the dual pan moon roof on my 2013 Limited and we love it. My only beef is that I wish I could have the roof in the “vent” position with the shade open only a few inches. I can’t do it because the shade is power operated in both opening and closing , ( ‘can’t manually close it so that it’s open only slightly). My previous cars had manual shades and you could close them any amount with the roof in the vent position. Oh well …

Although I don't know for sure, I highly doubt that you can get a moonroof similar to the OEM one. On older vehicles I have seen them added when they were referred to as a 'sunroof' but they were all manual tilt ones without shades. A moonroof is not listed as an accessory and the roof of an Explorer without a factory moonroof is different. Your roof has the 'ribs' from one end to the other while the ones with a moonroof only have them at the back with a tapered end at the moonroof. I doubt a 3rd party would even want to attempt it. Also not sure what it would do to the integrity of the roof.

Thanks... Maybe I can look at a Manual Sunroof..

The problem is going to be that the roof isn't flat. That will make it near impossible to seal because you will be cutting through those raised 'ribs'.
Good luck and let us know what you find out.

... and a sun roof introduces a large opening in the roof of the vehicle, causing a loss of structural stiffness. That has to be compensated for by adding structure elsewhere in the chassis or unibody.

Your best - and cheapest - bet would be to sell yours and buy the car you want. IMHO the idea of adding the roof is simply a non-starter... sorry.

just my .02 of course :salute:

The same crossmember is in the roof of my nonsunroof as the one with so you'd probably be okay with maintaining structure....but I agree, I'd think you'd come out ahead just trading up for one and paying the difference.
