Hello,

I have an 04 x with 78k on it 4.0, i was told by the shop that I had a bad intake manifold gasket and the the injector o-rings are leaking. Well i decided to tackle this project myself. My question is that now that I have the intake off , the chambers on both the intake and the engine are covered in this oily thick crude, how do i get this off? Can I use thottle body clean and scrap it off? Do I not worry about it? FYI the o-rings and gaskets looked just find. Thanks for your help

does sound as if the shop wanted to sell you unneeded repairs:mad:. Why would they do this? Perhaps they thoughts you had a vacuum leak???

if the gunk is not thick I would ignore it. If you feel compelled to remove it, I would probably try MAF cleaner or carb cleaner.

You need Carb cleaner or Intake Manifold Cleaner(its the same thing)

I used to be able to find a can of Intake Cleaner at autozone, but cant find it anymore.....i always thought it worked alittle better than regular carb cleaner......it was a silver/shiny can.

I also use PB Blaster to get gunk off of intakes.

Usually hit it with some PB Blaster to break the tough gunk off.
Then try wiping it off.

Then hit it with some Carb cleaner

You should STRONGLY consider getting a plastic scraper from Lowes or Autozone or any hardware store.
(if you have any aluminum surfaces to clean)
You will need this to scrape junk off of the intake manifold Gasket Mating surfaces, obviously so you can have a smooth surface when your ready to stick the gasket on.
(this is ONLY if it requires a gasket....some manifolds have rubber gaskets that just hold into place)
