how tough is this replacement? It looks fairly easy. also does the truck require alingment after a new intermediate shaft is installed?

Man, everyone calls things different names, which is the intermediate shaft?

it's the steering shaft that connects to the upper steering shaft right by the firewall and the bottom half of it has a joint then that connects to the rack. it also slides in and out.

Okay i got ya. That's not bad at all. 2 bolts--both 13mm, one top one bottom. I have to take mine off every once in a while and grease the joint in it cause my boot is torn and it gets full of crud. But it only takes about 5-10 minutes to take that baby off.

Happy trails!!

Hey so you say your boot is torn and gets junk in there....how do you tell... does the steering get hard? my boot has been torn since i bought the truck and I've been up to the dunes 5 times now so I know it's got sand in it. my steering is sometimes really hard and I think it;'s the joint. i didn;t know I could lube it. I just purchased a shaft off a 99 sport that only had 4,000 miles on it. The boot is also a lot bigger so hopefully it holds up. I didn;t even think to lube it....

Yeah the steering gets really jerky. I replace my PS pump twice and my rack twice then we saw that joint wide open. Yeah i just take it out and slam pack that baby full of grease cause i'm to cheap to buy a new one. How much did you pay for the shaft, i know ford wants about 130 for it.

Happy trails!!

I paid $40 They had others also if you want me to try to grab you one for the same price. The others had a bit more milage though (ANywhere from 22,000 to 121,000)

Guys where do you get at this shaft from? The bottom or top? Is it easy to see whether it's torn or not?

Jason, you have to take both bolts out then it slides out. I think i did the top bolt first then the bottom. You can look up under your truck and you can see the boot, just above the rack and pinion. That's the easiest way to tell it if is torn, caues mine tore from the bottom up, that's why it gets so nasty. I hope that's what you were asking.

Curtis--i don't need one, thanks for asking though. I have a ford grave yard near me that has a ton of explorers and rangers, so i'm good to go.

Happy trails!!
