I'm stumped.

'91 explorer 283000miles.

One day the car is fine the next day it's running like I have water in the gas.
That was 5 tank fulls ago, so that's not it.

Car runs fine, then it bucks a bit like water in the gas. then runs OK again. NO ENGINE LIGHT
The wife says the exhaust smells more then usual. No sweet, not like raw gas, just smells more.

Plugs are fairly new, same with the wires.
I didn't ask if gas mileage took a dive or not.

I haven't done more then a quick glance under the hood for Electrical Connector issues. I just had Shoulder surgery so I can't get crazy.

Fuel pressure Reg?? Is there an easy way to see if it is failing?

This one has me baffled.

Are you getting a check engine light? If so get the codes read. Sometimes(not always) the fpr will leak gas through the vacume line. Pull the vac line from the side of the fpr and check. You could also get a fuel pressure guage and chek the pressure. Also try simple things such as cleaning the maf, iac change fuel filter.

OK, There is a vacuum hose going to the FPR. I wasn't sure on the Explorers. In the 100K miles I have owned this, I have not had to tak e alook at the Regulator so I wasn't sure hoe it is setup. With my Volvo; Yes, if the vacuum line side smells like gas, the diaghram probably went bad. OK I should be able to do that. As mentioned, No Engine Light. So I haven't checked for codes.

Yesterday I cleaned the Throttle Body and the MAF. about two months ago I did the Idle Control and fuel filter. That's why I have nowhere to go. All the piddly stuff was done as a course of maintenance.

if u have a smell from your exhaust an u dont find any leaks my thought would be your cat converters are shot

I would think so too BUT I passed Emissions inspection less than 4 weeks ago.

get a vacuum gauge and check to see if exhaust is restricted.

passing smog test does not mean the cats are ok.

i have similar problems, i also replaced everything Tony did, AS well as recent brand new cats, and the rest of the exhaust

edit: restored an older thread. [only a few months LOL]
