I am having a problem with my 92 2wd Auto. I've tried to do some searching but to no avail. Occassionally, i attempt to start my truck in the morning and get nothing but a click from the relay on the left side of the engine bay. If i wait a few seconds, then hold down the brake and turn the key again, the problem will most of the time go away. This occurs so randomly that i cant pin it down to one particular item. The vehicle has 66k and other than this everything runs fine.

Recently Replaced:
Fuel Pressure Reg. (Fuel Pump was tested)
O2 Sensors

I do have a small oil leak from some unknown area.
I was thinking starter but it doesnt have the dying click sound that starter problems have.

Any ideas on what it could be would be appreciated.

Test your starter solenoid on your fender..

I tested the solenoid and i believe its good. It seems when i turn the key and dont hear that 2 second buzz noise the car wont start. I wait a second, then turn the key and hear the buzz noise it will start just fine. Could it be the fuel pump relay. I dont even know where thats located so i couldnt test. Something else i noticed saturday is occassionally when parked the fan will cycle on repeatedly about every 5 seconds, then cut off right away. Could it be related?

Question? Will the vehicle not start or not crank? A bad fuel pump relay shouldn't cause the vehicle to not turn over. From my experience, when you have a bad fuel pump relay the engine will keep cranking and never fire.

It doesnt crank at all.... I just hear a single click which i believe is coming from the starter relay. The thing that confuses me is that its just so random. Temperature, cold/warm start, fuel level etc have no effect on it. Plugs and wires are good looking and arent flooded. One thing i did noticed on saturday is the battery cables are in crappy condition. Could that be it? Battery and alt. are in great condition.

I had a simlar problem with my 96 Bronco. I thought I had found a bad connection several times (connections at the solenoid on the firewall, connections at the starter, etc) that fixed it, but it kept coming back. I finally replaced the starter (it looked like it had seen a lot of dirt and rust and someone suggested that the problem could be the connections inside the starter itself). I have not had a problem since. Battery cables or connections could certainly be the problem though and should be checked first.

Replaced the relay and cables to no avail. Anyone know where i can get a solenoid for cheap. Cheapest i've found around here is at crappy advanced auto parts and it was 45 bucks.

might want to change battery cable or clean the terminals as well

Done and Done as per post right above yours;) . Thanks anyways though.

I had a similar problem with my '94 XLT two summers ago. I couldn't troubleshoot it anymore so I took it in to the dealership and they messed with it for a week. It turned out to be the PCM power relay. Mine wouldn't start every once in a while and then it finally gave up completely. It also cut out in the middle of traffic twice. Your problem doesn't sound as bad as this, but maybe it will help.
