Any help or insight would be appreciated. I have an 02 Ford SportTrac.
Started last Fall, fairly hot, stopped off after driving about 30-40 min from work, ran into store came back out an tried to start. Engine cranked fine, started for a split second while the engine shook and then died. Tried to start again and it would do the same thing. Called tow truck. After fifty minutes when the tow truck got there, the driver started it right up and it started without hesitation. Dropped it off at Ford dealer but they couldn't find anything wrong with it (no codes). Had them replace fuel filter while it was there. One week later less hot and at night driving for 60min, stopped at store, did the same thing. I tried to start about every five minutes and after about fifteen minutes started right up like a normal start.
Now I did not have any of that problem through the rest of the Fall through the Winter and most of the Spring seasons. Started to happen again at the end of Spring, early Summer. It would only happen after I have been driving for a while and the temp outside would be above 80. When it would happen, I'd wait for about an hour and it would start right up. Never would do it when the engine was cold.
... Until a few weeks ago. This time it cranked but it didn't attempt to fire and this was the first time it happened when the engine was cold. It was hot and humid out though. I thought good, whatever was wrong finally went up and it could get fixed correctly. Nope! Tow truck picked it up, and while dropping it off at the dealer, started the truck while on the flatbed and drove it off and parked it. And of course the shop looked at it and couldn't find anything wrong with it. Stopped off after picking it up from shop and it again, cranked and fired but shook and died right after it fired up! Just the other day sitting in my garage it cranked but wouldn't fire so I waited for about 60-90 minutes. and it started right up. The mechanic suggested to replace the fuel pump but couldn't guarantee that would fix the problem. I had a mustang with a bad fuel pump and that shut off on me while I was driving, not sure if the same problem would happen with every faulty fuel pump. It runs great other than this intermittent starting problem.
Are there any recommendations or things I could do to try to narrow things down to pinpoint the cause?
