Intermitting fuel guage

Question on an intermitting fuel guage!!

I have one very intermittent fuel gauge. It worked fine ever since i bought the truck back in 2001.

It all started when i pulled the insturment cluster out to actually try and fix my tachometer (cracked sodder joints on the circit board back there).

I took it all out, and did what i did to the tach. As i was putting it back togeather, i drove the car around a minute to see if i got the quickconnect back in for the speedometer; thats when i noticed my gas gauge flung straight up to *F*ULL.

i was like umm, no..

ever since then it has been jumping around... mainly jumping up. At times ill start the car and the fuel gauge will work just fine. Then at other times it will say i have more then i actually have.

ive already tried taking apart the insturment cluster again and cleaning the little studs it connects to the harness with. everthing back there looks good. it just doesnt make since that i would take it apart and it would start working intermittently.

ok, no idea on fuel guage anyone? no typical short some where? or i gotta buy a new fuel guage? some kinda switch gone bad? anything?

i know fuel gauges go a lot on first gen exploders. Everyone that ive known that has had a first gen has had one common problem... the fuel guage.
