Hey guys and gals, i recently discovered the site and its great. I need your help! I've got a 98 4x4 sohc and over bumpy or rough roads i get a disturbing "clunk" from what i believe is my front suspension. i've checked the heat shields on the exhaust and don't think that was it. The dealer sd it was due to the aftermarket shocks. Sd they were loose. I made sure they were tight but same problem. Anything you suggest i tell the dealer? Cures, suggestions, guesses!!
I'm perplexed!!

The stock rubber bushings are junk, replace both front sides with polyurethane ones, guarentee that is your clunk, it is common, and I believe this was discussed before in the suspension forum.

keach,
you might want to check your radius arm bushings, mine were toast, and made the same noise. good luck, hope this helps.

Keach,
Before you spend all night trying to find where the radius arm bushins are on your 98... There are none. Radius Arm bushings are only on the older Explorers. When the switched to the torsion bar suspeion they stopped with the radius arm bushing. One thing I found, we had a wierd clunk on our 92 and I found out my wheel bearing was not tight. Unfortunately, that about all I can think of on a 98 since I have only seen underneath the newer ones a few times.

I have the same problem on my '98. Check the drivers side rear leaf for interferance with the gas tank skid plate. The bolt for the clamp on the front half of the spring is probably hitting the skid plate. Look for rub marks on the skid plate and have a couple of friends bounce it up and down while you watch for contact. But don't have them stand on the bumper, they have to lift up. You will notice the contact on the way up (what would actually be the spring drooping while driving). Or try jacking it up by the frame so the spring is free to hang down. Then take it back to Ford and have them sort it out.

I had a similar noise in my '91 Navajo. I realize that my truck's a little different than a '98, but I believe the stock rubber bushings mentioned are in between the top of the shock and were it bolts to the truck. I've replaced mine twice and they've broken out giving me a clunking noise over bumps. I'm going to get poly replacements nexts. hope this helps a little

maniak,
sorry for the error, i didnt look to see what year exp. he has. i stand corrected. i almost sounded like a chevy man!

I was referring to the radius arm bushings, they seem to be a common problem on the 91-94 models, I believe Ford does'nt even sell rubber ones anymore. Anyway I was unaware of the difference of the model year.

Hi from West Australia
I have a 97xlt and mine had a clunk from th e front , i checked out the bolts that hold the torsion bar adjusters on gear box crossmember and they had come lose .
I then jacked up the front , did up the bolts an adjusted the torsion bars up and the clunk is now gone.

run hard or run home
