Is Every 5r55s Equal, or is there a difference between 2wd, 4wd, awd & 4.0 vs 4.6?

I'm looking into reman options, and I can't get a good handle on which part to zero in on. As I understand it, a 5r55s is a 5r55s no matter what it came out of. But a lot of sites ask for engine size and type of drive.

So is there a more specific part number than 5r55s that I should be looking for? Or do I need to rely on filling in vehicle details on various parts websites to find a good deal?

Some sites list the 5r55s as being specific to the Aviator, though I have an AWD limited and according to my VIN, it shipped with the 5r55s.

Also, who would you recommend buying a remanned transmission from? Amazon? Ebay? RockAuto? Other?

The basic "guts" of the transmission and front mounting are the same.

Torque Converter between the 4.0 and the 4.6 would more than likely be a different type. Thus the need for specifics.

2wd, 4wd, and AWD would all relate to the tail shaft extension of the transmission.

As for a reliable re builder...

Thanks. No answer on a good brand? Or are you saying that none of them are good? That ellipsis is a bit ambiguous.

A few of the forum members here have their own shops but I don't know where they are.

Most shops will want the whole truck so they can do the removal and replacement to cover their butt against a warranty claim.

I don't mind that. The first shop I called quoted me 2900 for the job, including 2025 for the part, which leads me to believe they plan on keeping the core charge.

Was it a general shop or a transmission specialty shop?

You just need to find someone that will give you a warranty.

I'm about to shell out about $2500.00 for a race built 4r70W and I'm doing the install myself.

So $2900 doesn't seem too bad.

General shop. But is it customary for the shop to also keep the core? I feel like that $400-600 should come off my bill. It's free money to them.

I would look for a transmission shop that would rebuild your case.

That's what I'm doing with mine.

Going to have to ship it by a Freight Line to the builder.

How challenging of a driveway drop is it?

Not bad if you got someone competent to help you.

(2) Good jack stands and a good floor jack.

The BIG thing is to get the converter locked back in properly when going back up.

That's where people screw up.

If the converter slips out and you jam the transmission forward, Bye Bye transmission pump...

I've seen it more than once.

Hey we are always here to answer questions if you get stuck.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!

P.S.

NO BEER TILL AFTER IT RUNS AND DRIVES...

Sorry mate!
