I am new driver. I saw the mechanic raise my car when they change the oil. So I am wondering, if I change the oil myself, is it possible to crawl under the car without raising the car? I have no tools to raise the car. I am slim, if I can get under the car, is it possible to change the oil filter and empty the oil? anybody did it before? Thanks.

I just climb under, I actually find it easier to get to everything when its not jacked up. Give it a shot. Its very quick to do when you don't have to jack the car up.

I do it all the time, I like it, quicker and I feel safer the drain plug is stuck on good and I really have to yank on it.

I could slide under my other Ex's to do it, but it wasn't easy. This one makes it easier with a few extra inches of clearance.

Then again, I'm a rather large mammal. :D

I don't have to raise the Explorer to change the oil and I am also rather large.

dito :(

I was going to say, how fat is the mechanic? LOL. The only vehicle I've had to jack up or drive up on ramps to change the oil is my parents Camry, aside from that I can get under most of my vehicles just fine. My escape is a little tight to get under, but I can always change the oil without jacking it up... if I had to do anything extensive, might need to get it on a ramp...

IF you can barely fit you can place a couple 2x4 on the ground and drive up on them. they are worth 2" of clearance.

Depends on how large you are. I'm 5'6" and 158 lbs and I have no problems crawling under it on my back and rotating a little to reach something.

For me changing the oil in the Explorer is the easiest vehicle I've had to deal with.

Technically 1.5" unless you're using a rough sawn 2x4.

I'm 6'1" and about 200-210 lbs. No problems here crawling under to change the oil without jacking it up. I've also done the fuel filter without jacking it up.

Actually, only about 1 1/2", unless you have some really old lumber. The lumber you purchase today is about 1/2" smaller then the size its listed as (so a 2x4 really measures only 1 1/2" x 3 1/2"

My bad. You are right, theory is still good though.
