is it possible to get a decent explorer for $2000 or less?

Im in the market for a '91 - '94 explorer. but the catch is im only going to have about $2000. high milage doesnt scare as my other two cars have 240k and 197k on them and have never left me stranded. what should i look out for?

I bought mine for $1400 about a year ago. It is a 93 XLT in great shape with a new Jasper motor and fresh tranny rebuild. Both had less that 35K on them when I bought it. The guy I bought it from was going to trade for a newer Ex and $1400 was all the dealer would give him in trade. I told him "hell, I'll give ya $1400 for it" He said "SOLD!!" All I did was put tags on it and later added 31's and have been driving it for the past year with no problems other than the starter going out last week. Keep looking and I am sure you will find something.

If you aren't afraid of a little work, there can be some screaming deals out there!
My 94 EB, with 150K cost me $900 with a locked tranny, i fixed it with a $30 part (with teh help of this board)
with some cosmetic pieces, tranny fluid and a few othere parts that i replaced while it was in the air, new front rotors and pads, my total investment is about $1500.

i bought our 93 ex for $800 from the teller at our bank. i needs front end work and some fenders and it;ll be good as new. it has about 184k miles on it.

It was dumb luck AND dumb owner. I got a '91 Eddie B. for $450! The few problems were/are. Rear window Regulator is broken. Drivers door sagged and it had an intermittant No-Start problem.

I put about $80 into it. Tuneup wires plugs all fluid changes.

$6 for new hinge pin and Striker the door closes perfect.

$18 for Fuel pump Relay. so far I think that solved the no-start issue.

I got very very lucky though. After a 10 hour clean up the 'X' sparkles.

Yeah, I got my 91 EB for a $1000, and I've had to do quite a few small things, but it's looking to be a good vehicle for me now. It's all been normal stuff I've done so far:

driver's and passenger's hinge pins
plugs and wires
oil and filter
air filter
fuel filter
center console armrest bracket
driver's door inner handle replacement
thermostat (this one and the next are to be done tonight)
alternator

Given the glut of vehicles in the used car market, along with forecasts for fuel price increases, older SUV's are dirt cheap right now.
