its always possible! :). Ford probably wouldn't do it though, I believe even at the factory they outsource that work. Although you may be able to call your dealer and see who they'd recommend. I'd recommend some place that only does sunroofs, or at least mainly sunroofs. Here in Denver there is a palce called Mikes Sunroofs and thats all they do. They did one in a friend of mine's F-150 and it looks as good as factory!

You can get one installed pretty easily. Anything from a cheap $150 one to upwards of $1000. I definately wouldn't even consider Ford. They would just send it out anyway and charge you an enormous mark-up. Go to a glass or sunroof/moonroof company. A friend had one installed in his '95 Taurus for about $800. It had power slide into the roof and power tilt. The company used his headliner material on the sun shield and unless you knew his car didn't come with it, you would think it was factory.

I know this one, because I did it.

The dealership out sources, even brand new vehicles. So I went to the local place where the dealer goes. Because of the ridges in the roof, there is only one electric and one manual version that will fit. It is only made for the Explorer. The electric was $1200 installed. Reason being, because they have to remove your headliner and over head console and route the tracking for the sunroof to retract into the headliner. Versions that retract the sunroof on top would interfere with the roof rack. The manual version runs $400 installed. I need to go look at the name on the rack itself, but it comes with a lifetime leak warranty and a 10 year parts warranty. The only things wrong with it:
1. No carrying case, so when you take it out, you just have to lay it in your back cargo area.
2. No sun shade, so in the summer months you are cooking, especially long trips during the day. I just went and got mine tinted ($20) as dark as possible. That helped quite a bit.
I can send you pics if you are still interested.

It's out sourced!

You guys are right! I can further validate this, because my wife works for a company that does this. Her job is to visit all the dealerships and sell aftermarket goodies. I'll have a Sunroof installed in mine soon.

Check the company out that is doing the work, some do very good work and some not so good. Ask for referals and check with other dealerships and see if they are using them.

Good Luck.

What about the all too famous myth that aftermarket sunroofs tend to leak? Does anyone know of any problems from aftermarket sunroofs?

Like I said, mine comes with a lifetime leak warranty. It is triple sealed. And...
This is only made for the Explorer, so it matches the curve of the roof perfectly and all the trim pieces mirror the roof and the rain gutters.

sooo tempting.... :D

whats the difference between a sunroof and a moonroof??

Sun & Moon Roof.....

Chewie,

The difference is Night & Day......

( The are the same thing )

*smackshead* doh :p

I know that there is a difference in Moon roof & Sun roof. Not sure which is which.

1. When you open by pushing a button and it slides in the roof or up or half open.

2. The Glass pops up,down, or out.

Remember the faithful words... You get what you pay for!

The ones that slides into the roof is more expensive but have warranties for 5-10 years to life.
The others are warrantied for a year or so.

I was under the impression that a sunroof only pops up(like my manual one) but a moon roof slides back.(like the electric one on a limited)

Well....

The ones you can get now will do both.

You can get it where it slides back in the roof and it also has the option to flip or Pop up in the back depending on how you want it set for the time being.

In the old days it wasn't quit that good. A lot of cars had the manual roof that would pop up in the back or you could unlatch it and remove the whole thing.

The aftermarket shop refers to them all as Sunroofs now. Whether it is mechanicle and only pops up and removes or if it is electric that slides back into the roof.

So, for the most part, it is still an interchangable term.

Chewie, it was a good question. No headsmack needed.

Other topics we can discuss next...

Double-Clutching ( Fast & Furious ) no longer needed due to synchros in tranny, although some roadracers still do it . Not needed in a drad race.

Full Race Cam or 3/4 race cam or 1/2 race cam. Subjective term going back to early street race days, used to describe how lumpy ( Rough Idle ) a cam was.

Sunroof is made out of glass and you can see through.
A moon roof is made out of metal and has to be retracted or removed to be seen through. You really only see moonroofs on older vehicles, especially BMW's and Mercedes.

ahhh... i coulda swore they were different! :D

What if.....

What if it's Glass with a cover velcro'd in place. Would it be a moon roof while the cover is in place, but a sunroof if the cover is removed?

Had to ask..

Makes since though, my old RX-7 was a solid non see thru roof that would crank up or remove only. Dealer called it a moon roof, but I always thought it was called a moon roof because you could only remove the roof or flip it up. Never thought it was because it was solid non see through stuff.

As I was reading that, I was like... Come on. Work with me here.

LOL.

One of my friends just had a sunroof put in a Toyota Tundra. It's a manual pop up one, it cost around $400. And the first day he had it, he was driving around with it open, then went to work and parked it in the parking lot, and it started to rain, and since the sunroof was brand new he wasn't used to it, so he forgot to run out and close it

dont do it! my aftermarket sunroof sucks! it came with my truck when i bought it used and its such a piece of crap the only thing it doesnt do is leak. when it is open it rattles like you wouldnt believe, when i have it open i have to stick a rubber doorstop in there to keep it from rattling. just the other day i punched the interior cover peice because it no longer moved with the glass part.

in my moms mazda she has a "moon roof" that has a carpeted cover on the inside that slides back into the rest of the roof exposing the sunroof, then that can either flip up, or slide back into the roof aswell.
