A moon roof is made out of metal and has to be retracted or removed to be seen through. You really only see moonroofs on older vehicles, especially BMW's and Mercedes.
The key difference between a sunroof and moonroof is that a moonroof slides out of the way for an open roof. A sunroof has to be physically removed and stored for an open roof. The old moonroofs were solid and could not be seen through from either side(there were exceptions), current moonroofs are mirrored on top and see through on the bottom. Current moonroofs are also made out of glass.
To answer another question about aftermarket sunroofs leaking, it just depends on which brand you buy. I have added either a power moonroof or a popup sunroof to every car I have ever owned(haven't done it to my X yet though) and have never had a leak. I usually try to find an ASC or Fairmount brand.
