Is it possible to replace a broken rear wheel stud on a 2000 Mountaineer w/out pulling the axle? I have to replace the rear parking brake shoes anyway, but from the pictures I've looked at, I can't tell if there's enough room to insert a new stud with the parking brake shoes out of the way. What if I unbolt the brake backing plate so that I can angle it?

Absolutely:

You will need this tool to install without damaging the threads. Recommend using an impact wrench, but can do with tire iron and lots of elbow grease:

** Might be available as a loaner tool **

If you decide to pull the axle instead, changing a stud is simple - hammer in the new one until flush. Good time to repair the parking brakes, too.

Thanks - just what i needed to know. i've changed quite a few broken studs in my time, i just wasn't sure if there was enough room to wiggle the new one in w/out needing to pull the axle out a bit. good to know you don't even have to remove the parking brake shoes.
