OHV to SOHC swap...is it possible?

That's what I was thinking Mr.Q...its just a ten horse difference between the SOHC and the V8, if I was asking about a SOHC to V8 swap that wouldn't be worth the trouble but a 40 hp gain switching from OHV to SOHC isn't miniscule at ALL. I really believe a rebuild on the timing chains and cam gears would last like you said at least 60 thou or more.

Thanks Roscoe, I appreciate all input from everyone on here...that being said, if I go SOHC do I need any computer changes? Missing sensors?

You'd need a SOHC computer, wiring harness and probably some sensors. Even rebuilding a SOHC with the best, most current parts available would not make it last longer. It's just a bad design. The problem is the cam tensioners break, the hydraulic tensioners weaken and the guides wear out. Last time I checked using the best parts available and changing synthetic oil regularly does't stop springs from weakening or plastic from breaking. I still say swapping to a SOHC is ill advised.

People have a tendency to repeat hearsay and other's opinions rather than actual experience.

I swapped out the SOHC for a V8 because I wanted the extra low end torque and, I am not ashamed to say, fear of the death rattle. But after working on them and getting more experienced with the nuances of this engine, they are actually quite dependable. Check your local junkyard. How many Explorer's with SOHC's over 150k? 200k? 250? Quite a few.

Remember, forums tend to give you the extreme ends of the issue, exe: the very good and the very bad.
