Hey guys I have a problem that I hope someone can point me in a good direction.late last night I finished replacing my transfer case in my 99 xl with the v6 ohv 5 speed manual. And it drove great all day today I just took it for a ride and it was wet out so I wanted to test the 4x4 so I left it in auto 4x4 I was rolling like 5 mph reved it to about 3k and dumped the clutch and I heard a loud bang from under the truck got out and I don’t see no fluid leaking no drive shafts broken everything looks fine but no gear does anything but give a horrible grinding banging noice and my rear tires where locked up until I got pulled out of the road by a freind so I’m totoaly lost and need help did I just blow the trans or snap the output shaft Plzz help thanks

It’s very possible you’ve destroyed the transmission. In the future I wouldn’t do this again, as it’ll damage the transfer case as well.

Is there a rebuild kit I could buy for the trans or should I just get a new used one?and would you happen to know where I could order one because they seem hard to find the 5 speed manual

And if anyone knows the name of the trans I’m looking for that would be great I can’t find any numbers on it.it’s the 5 speed manual out of a v6 ohv 1999 xl.also if anyone knows what other vehicals have the same trans that would help a lot thanks

car-part.com has transmissions listed, most of those junk yards will ship. The ford ranger used the same trans and I would consider the 01 and newer trans more desirable. The transmission model is M5OD-R1

M50D-R1 are very common to find rebuild stuff for you can find um just by Google I don't care for the one in the second gen to tight of gears the first gens are better

If you want to rebuild the transmission, 1st thing to do is figure out what parts went critical mass. If it looks like a grenade went off inside the unit, it might be cheaper to get a $400 transmission.

Remove the top cover of the transmission and INSPECT the guts. It sounds as though internal parts are broken; if so, that should be visible. The transmission may be repairable.

Hey guys I just got the trans and t case out found that i did snap the out put shaft clean in half so I was wondering if I should go get a new trans from the junk yard for 200 or should I see about getting that shaft replaced if possible the t case on the other hand I think I need to replace for the 2nd time this week I shook it and hear metal rattling in side so maybe a gear broke or something

I’d puke the oil out of the t case and look for metal. I’d take a risk on a user manual transmission. They are relatively stout.

When I took the fluid out of the t case it looks like it’s metallic red🤣 but no chunks or even shavings but I can hear rattling inside I’ll probably bite the bullet and go get another one to be on the safe side and yeah there’s a lkq junk yard near me they only want 200 for the trans and 130 for the t case do any of you have any good recommendations for a good throw out bearing/slave cylinder mine was making a lot of noice so I might as well cha get it while everything’s in peices

To have simultaneously broken TWO inline drive components would be the worst of misfortune. Usually when the weakest link fails, inline stress is relieved, which saves the rest.

So condolences on all the breakage, though you don't seem too upset, more like "happy days, yeah!" Please teach a class on how to be cheery after totally borking one's ride. I'll enroll immediately!

😀I was pretty pissed when it broke I’m only 17 and I’ve spent so much money and time on this explorer but at the end of the day what’s done is done and parts are a lot cheaper than I thought I’ll have her back on the road tommorw just got back from the junk yard 300 dollars got me a used t case and trans.thank god my dad showed me how to work on cars and YouTube exist or I would be spending a arm and a leg to get this fixed.I think I’m also not upset because I have two other “back up vehicals” 94 f150/98 sl600 thanks everyone for the help

Not much of a class to teach. Everyone makes mistakes in life, live and learn from it so history doesn't repeat itself.

In Ex I replaced my T-case with a 1354e T-case. I used the plug from my old T-case and hooked up the wires to the 1354e case. Hooked it up and it works. Still have my switch on my dash that transfers to 4x4 hi or low. Now I have true @ wheel drive. You can also go the Manual 1354 T-case from a Ranger or if you are able to find it from a 1st gen Explorer. That is VERY rare. Getting rid of your 4405 T-case gets rid of the Clutches. Going the 1354e you will get your 4x4 lights flash at you every once in a while. Other then that I have not had any issues having the 1354e in my 2nd gen Ex.

In the future jack it up and test or find mud. I found out when i was younger a welded diff doesnt hold up to jumping curbs lol. Blew the rear. Found one out of a 87 put it in my 93 in a walmart parking lot :) good times.
