If they are still suspect what makes them fail so often. On my other cars auto trans have are still going with over 200K on them. Thanks.

They are light duty trans, adapted from an old pinto (c3 I believe). They were not designed to move as much wieght as the Explorer, and weren't designed for the rigors of off roading, towing, or any kind of abuse. Get a tranny cooler, and change you fluid if it isn't too bad.

got a tranny cooler and it has lasted 213000 all highway miles though no off roading

They were designed for a 3L engine. Considering that, they have done pretty well. 94 has improvements over earlier years. Other than random parts that mechanically break, the clutches will last well over 200K. You still need to add an extra cooler to get the seals to last.

Ok, thanks. I just wanted to know. So driving around town and light off-roading and it should be ok?

Yes should be fine. Good advice above... heed it.

do tranny coolers really make that much of a difference in the 1st gen tranny longevity?

Heat is the enemy of any auto trans. They are a good idea any any car, especially if driven hard.
