I had mine rebuilt a couple of years ago, after the warranty ran out it started acting up again, where the rpms increase and it doesn't shift right away.
I would think something like that should last a helluva lot longer! Fully computerizing/electronifying things aren't always better.

So is there an alternative that can replace this transmission?

The transmissions in the V8 Explorers (4R70W) are the best. I don't think it is an easy swap on your V6 thou...
A supplemental cooler like the one found in "towing package" Explorers, it might help your case.

If you really want to go non-Ford, there is an adapter to go with the 700-r4.

That would probably end up costing same or more than his 2000 XLT V6 Explorer :)

He didnt ask for cheap... he asked for a non Ford trans that can replace his 5r.

You guys bring up a good point, I would rather not spend a ton of money for another tranny. If I have to I would be willing to attempt to work on fixing it myself. I just don't know why these certain trannies keep eating themselves within a certain time after being fixed! Is there better parts to replace the parts that are junk?

Most of the problems in the 5r are in the valve body. There are upgraded parts for it. And you dont even have to drop the trans to get to it.
