It would be difficult to wire with the tailgate because of the tailgate movement and no electronics already there. I have a backup camera on mine and it is a really nice looking chrome license plate frame. It works fantastic and has great night vision as well. For our rigs, I would recommend that.

Which one do you have? I put a cheapie I found on Amazon on mine and it is so bad it's pretty much useless.

I'll have to look it up, but it was close to 100 bucks and has the colored lay lines. It pipes through an rca to a 6.5 inch Sony deck.

What wire did you use to get signal for reverse? I tapped into a wire that shows +12~ volts when in reverse, but the camera seems to come now and again when not in reverse...

I am not sure. I had a shop install it. There must be some instructions somewhere that would outline where specifically to wire it up so it does not do that.

The way I understand it is people put the power for the camera to the backup lights and hook it to your HU.

I had a factory one installed by my son in my 2006 Ridgeline, so it is definately possible. The main thing for me is there a emblem camera to fit in the emblem space on the tailgate of my truck?

Looks like a good unit, the problem is wiring it up. I've been through three of the cheaper units that attach to the license plate bolts and never had one last longer than a year in PA's weather.
Ditto the Line Of Fire rear lights too.

if i recall there was one that mounts inplace of the handle of which i know matches the 97-03 F150 handle.

Explorer camera

Saw this post and thought I could help. I used to have an Explorer but recently traded it in on my F150. I had a Camera Source backup camera kit on my Explorer and I chose to transfer it over to my F150 because I loved it. It's the same kit for both vehicles and very easy to install so don't sweat that part. They had an option on the harness that allowed me to tap into power at the back of the truck for simplicity, even though the harness is meant to hit power inside the cab to keep everything out of the snow/rain. I'm lazy so I took the easy way out by hitting the reverse light in the trailer bundle.

I've had this camera for about 1-1/2 years and it still works great. The resolution is really nice and the parking lines (the red, yellow, green lines up the center) match the Ford version so no one can tell it's not a factory part. here's the link to their Ford section but mine specifically is the Ford F150 / Superduty Backup Camera for Aftermarket Display's.

Tapped into the reverse wiring in the taillight assembly to power the camera, and a black/pink wire behind the kick panel to activate the reverse mode on my Pioneer h/u. There were 3 black/pink wires behind my kick panel and only one was the correct one.

Thanks,

I will give it a go and check the wiring again...It works as it should (most of the time) but every so often it just turns the backup camera on...I do have the camera wired to acc power and ground so that if the key is on I can turn the camera on via the head unit. (to check on something I may be towing etc).
