Hi,

I recently installed a 6000k HID kit in my explorer. The problem is that the headlamp assembly that comes with it is a sealed beam type, which seems to restrict some of the light output. Does anyone know where they are selling projector, or diamond back headlamp assemblies for explorers? Thanks.

Welcome to the site!! You'll find just about anything you want to know about your truck right here! Welcome aboard!

The HIDs are nice!! I checked out your pics and they look very impressive, and very cool. But I don't think that anyone makes any different headlight assemblies for the Explorer. Every now and then the question pops up about clear headlights but I don't think anyone has ever found any.

I may be able be able to help you with the Diamondback if you let me know the size you need. I currently have them in 7"x6" and 4"x6" sizes. I am not sure if these will fit in your setup or not.

Hey Explorer Sport, I just measured my headlamps and they actually measured out to be 10(at the longest part)x4. The headlamp housings are not perfect rectangles either. Thanks anyways though :)

Stephen, thanks for the welcome and compliments on my hids. The HIDs you saw in the picture are the blue 6000k Phillips kit. Along side me is my friend Stan in his Liberty, who has the purple 6000k K2 kit. I know a couple of different websites where you can get either of these sets if you are interested. If you're interested in seeing more pictures of them in my car, they can be found at Dead Link Removed

JGB98EB,

I have 3 questions for you

1.How much better than stock are these as far as light output?
2.Is the kit legal?
3.How much did you pay for it (that is, if you don't mind)?

Hey Jason,

1) I will take a picture for you comparing my xenons to stock halogens in my friends car (the infamous wall shot). I would venture to guess that my xenons are 3x brighter than halogens.

2) No, the kit is not legal because in order for xenon HIDs to be legal you need an auto leveling system (which does not come in explorers, but only newer cars with factory xenon HIDs).

3) They cost me $575 total at www.supremepowerparts.com

I'll have those comparison pics in an hour :)

Hey Jason here are the pictures... sorry for the delay.

Here is the infamous wall shot comparing the brightness... you decide.

This is head on shot with my friend's Cavalier (stock halogens)

Maybe you'd like my indiglo gauges w/ neon needles (blurry pic tho)

Blue reverse lights too (I couldn't resist while doing the "wall shot")

Those comparison pics are amazing. Those HIDs look so much better than the stock lights. They make your fogs look so yellow! And you're right, they do look cool when tey turn on. Was the install very hard?? It's too bad they are illegal. Have you had much trouble with the cops??

Your guages look very cool too. You're the first one I've seen to install the intelliglow needles. There's a thread around here where some guys were talking about getting them, but yours are the first pics I've seen. They look pretty good.

Hey Stephen,

Actually my fog lights are aftermarket ones with yellow glass, but yes, my stock foglights looked yellow compared to the headlights. I didn't even need aftermarket ones for that! The installation was very easy except for trying to attatch the bulbs into the headlamp sockets. This was a difficult feat because I had to position the bulb so that the thick wire leading to the bulb was pointed directly down (so the light comes out properly). The wire was thick and didn't cooperate, but I finally got it into place. Also, the wiring on the Explorer is crappy because if my car is moving and I try to turn my headlights on, my right headlight cuts out, and won't start back up unless I stop the car and let it idle for about 30 seconds. In addition, if I accidentally trigger my high beams then my lights will cut out, and I will lose my right light again (note: the aftermarket xenon headlights do not have a high beam function because there is only one arc being sent through the bulb, but then again, they are so bright that you don't need high beams). That brings me to an interesting point though. The problem with the Explorer headlamp housing (aside from the sealed beam-type housing as opposed to a projector or even a diamond back) is that they are aimed so far down. So, I adjusted them upwards a tiny bit to find the happy medium between high beams and low beams.

Interestingly enough, I have not once had problems with the cops. Either cops don't care, or they know about xenon headlights and have accepted the fact that they are being installed on BMWs, Porsches, Mercedes, etc, and figure that if they are legal for those cars, then they must be legal for mine. I'm not sure if they think this or not, but I know that they never bother me, so it's all good. Although, if you do get your lights installed, definitely expect people to flash their high beams at you. You may piss some people off, but the way I see it is that pissing them off is outweighed by being able to see comfortably at night, and be noticed. ;)

On a last note, I didn't actually install the needle LEDs, I cheated and had someone install them for me. I guess I didn't dare venture into the "explorations" of taking off the dash, etc.
