Is this a sign of trouble? Transmission ???

Hey all!

On my '97 EB, I've noticed lately that when I'm sitting on a hill (nose up the hill) in Drive, the truck will roll ever so slowly backwards if I don't apply the brakes.

Now, every other automatic transmission vehicle I've had has always held itself nice and firm in this situation. Is this normal for the Ex or am I experiencing slippage somewhere in the drivetrain???

Depending on how steep the hill my 99 will sometimes roll backwards. I have been trying latley not to be stopped without my foot on the brake as I have seen to many accidents where people have been rear ended while stopped. The person doing the hitting has always said that they thought that the person infront of them was moving because they saw no brake lights. Then when they realized it was too late...

I actually hit someone once doing that....Many years ago driving an '83 Ranger 5-speed. I was driving home from work and was so exhausted that I fell asleep at the traffic light in Milford, NH. Truck rolled backward on me and into the car behind me...how's THAT for an embarassing wake-up-call?! :eek:

My 2000 XLT 4x4 will roll backwards on steep hills but not on slight grades (living in East TN we have a lot of hills.

mine will almost always roll backwards while stopped on a steep grade. All of my cars have done that though, as around where I live there are tons of stoplights at a steep grade.
 






I'm not sure, but I think it's bad practice to let the engine/trans hold your truck on a hill. I think this puts heat into the system when there is little air moving through the radiator.
 






It's not so much a matter of practice, as a question of function.
 






dont do it, that creates a ton of heat which will ultimately kill the trans.
 






Okay, okay...the original question was whether or not this newly discovered occurence of it rolling backwards when it didn't used to was a sign of slippage or not?

very hard to tell, most likely no because you would probably notice it when accelerating.

I never really learned much about automatic transmissions -especially with four-wheel-drives. Honestly, though, I think I do feel some slipping when I accelerate from a full stop.

Plus, a lot of the time the tach will shoot right up to redline before changing gears even if I'm not pushing the pedal hard. I actually have to kind of force it to shift by pressing the pedal, then releasing in an appropriate RPM range, then pushing it again and releasing again, etc, until I'm up to speed.
 






My 96 Ex 4x4 rolls backwards on steep inclines as well. And it'll roll forwards if I'm in reverse in the same situation. Lots of automatic transmissions do it, and if it does do it, it's not a sign of anything really. Some transmissions won't allow it, some will, depends on make/model.
 






could be a sign of problems, however, like he said above it depends on the incline. My XPLR does occationally on certain slopes however it has a brand new transmission - litteraly within 4,000 miles. I'd watch more for high reves between shifts and clunking into reverse. It never hurts to have a good local tranny shop do a road test on it, but I'd stay away from larger national chains - look for one that will actually listen to and feel the transmission when then dirve it. A real pro can tell you whats going on...trust me I've gone through more transmissions than than cars, especially in the xplr.

That's a sure sign something is hooped. Our 2006 V8 Explorer here at work has tranny issues. Put it in reverse from park and it'll sit there for 30 seconds and do absolutely nothing, as if it were in neutral. At first I thought I missed the gear and actually did put it in neutral, so I was looking around and playing with the gear selector a bit to make sure it was in reverse. My foot wasn't on the brake at the time, and all of a sudden the tranny went CLUNK, went into reverse, and jerked the Explorer about 5 feet backwards (luckily there was nothing behind me).

It does the same thing when shifting into overdrive. I was on the highway, passed a slower vehicle in front of me, and it shifted into overdrive at around 110 km/h (~65 mph) and jerked the whole SUV forward. That's some scary s*** when you're not expecting it.
