Is this a transfer case issue?????

Hi, my name is Holly and I would like to know why my 1997 Ford Explorer XLT 4x4 automatic transmission will start up but WON'T drive. I had the tranny rebuilt and torque converter changed out. Before I had these 2 parts changed out I had a high power drill sound coming from my front end when I let off the gas or coast down the road. I got the truck back for a mechanic and it was still making the high power drill noise. Now, just recently, the truck was not able to move. I was told that I need to replace the transfer case. Will that cause the vehicle not to move?

It can. The transfer case takes the rotation of the transmission and applies it to rear wheels or both front and rear wheels. I've not typically seen total loss of motion be the fault of a transfer case, however. Except when the shift motor on the transfer case is in neutral.

Sounds like you've had some expensive work done by some folks that didn't make sure they fixed the problem. I would get a second opinion and I would get it from a transmission shop. And I would ask them how much rebuilding the t-case would cost you, vs replacement.

Do you have a check engine light on or 4wd high 4wd low lights flashing on the dash?

Holly you are correct, it's the Tcase. Put it in 4low then post back or PM.

No I don't have the check engine light on and the 4wd high and 4wd low lights on the dash are not flashing

that is exactly the same thing my 96 XLT did on my way to Virginia for Christmas. It started making that noise and when my brother went to check it the next day, it would not move. After he replaced the transfer case it's working perfectly fine.

My '98 would do nothing in high range but, as drdoom said, I got it in 4 low and drove it home. It had a broken spring in the TC and was stuck between high and low range...
