Looks like a freeze plug.

i'm not sure what that's a picture of, but as far as i've been able to determine the computer's ability to set the CHANGE ENGINE OIL message is based on miles and time. since my last oil change, i've only driven about 1500 miles in 6 months, but my message center is telling me it's time to change my oil. the number of miles between changes/resets is defaulted to 7500, but you have the ability to change the number of miles (by percentage) using a procedure outlined in the owner's manual (for example 7500 = 100%). i do not believe the system actually looks at the condition of the oil in any way.

Thanks for the information. After more research i found out its a low oil/Temp sending unit.

ahhh, low oil level sensor makes sense, as the message center will tell you if the oil level is low. i don't know about it being able to check oil temp though, as there is no gauge or message to warn you about oil temp.

Is the oil level switch:

"Change oil" duration is determined by PCM via calculations, not a sensor.

well, as it's "sensing" the oil level i don't think it's that big of a stretch to refer to it as a sensor. for that matter, the picture YOU supplied refers to it as a SWITCH. don't get so hung up on semantics. technically we're both incorrect.

Yes you both are correct. The guy at the dealer is the one who told me it also is a low oil level and temp sensor. the issue i have is i replace my motor with one that doesn't have this switch in it . i was going to try to bypass it if i could but i dont think i can. so i am just going to swap out the uppe oil pans and it should be good to go. thanks for all the help!!

without the sensor in your oil pan did you get an error on the message center if you performed the system test?
I get an error message that say Oil Temp Signal Error only when doing the system test. That sensor is like $200+ !!!

From all that I have read, the message center determines "oil life" based on mileage and temperature. The target is 7500 miles, but depending on use, it may be much sooner.

Interesting - I didn't think the message center used anything but mileage to determine when to remind you of an oil change is due. AFAIK, my '97 doesn't have any way to track the passage of time (no place to set a date) nor any way to record oil temperature, if indeed that sensor does measure temperature as well as level. I have never seen any indication from the message center that it knows about oil temperature.

I have confirmed this, solved my issue today.

The sensor responsible for the message center error "OIL TEMP SIGNAL ERROR" is in the oil pan. It is a dual sensor, it measures temperature and oil level. It is VERY expensive, and hard to find.

Additionally, only trucks that have the message center will have this sensor, others will have a boss in the oil pan that has not been drilled or tapped.

Lastly, if this sensor is faulty and you get the above error, it will also say that your oil level is fine by default. You could be completely empty and you won't get the warning.

So, in case anyone else runs across this issue, now they can have a definitive answer.

I've got an Ultra Guage on my OBDII port on my '98 SOHC. IIRC you can set the oil intervals in 500 mile increments. I just changed to Mobil-1 Full Syn so I think I'm going to go with 6000mi increments, maybe longer.
The Ultra Guage has numerous settings it can read, many of which I'll never use. But for those of us without an Info Center it's pretty cool.

My infocenter has set by default for 100% oil life 7500 miles.
Use also synthetic oil.
