Is this Explorer worth $10K?

id say try and talk him down another 800-1000 bucks and take her, as previously stated, its a rare find so it may be worth the extra few bucks. ALso a repo notice isnt realy somthing to worry about, just that a previous owner was a dead beat ^.^

Or the previous owner could have been one of the hundreds of thousands of Americans that lost their job due to the economic downturn and was unable to afford the car note. Just saying..

then he could have defaulted on his loan and turned the vehicle over to his bank/credit union. instead he/she chose to try and use the vehicle for as long as possible (most banks wont issue a notice for 3-6 months)...just saying. it was an attempt at humor, im sorry it escaped you?... in either case, my origional statement stands, this doesnt directly effect the vehicle... but there may have been a lack of regular maintanance done... good maint records?

When I negotiated on my '03, I offered an "out the door" price of just under what they were asking. If they are asking $9900 then I would start your offer at $9500 to include all taxes, title, fees etc. The "out the door" price is important to know since all those added fees can add up (on mine it came to almost $1000). Worst they can say is no and then, if you really want it and can afford it, you can negotiate from there. One thing I found when I was shopping, is you need to be ready to walk away from just about any deal. I found my bargaining stance was stronger knowing that "this is what I will pay and not a penny more" and actually meaning it and conveying that to the dealer. The first truck I looked at, an 03 Dodge Durango, I made my offer and they said no and that the price they had stated was as low as they could go, I said thank you for your time and walked away, they stopped me as I was starting my car to leave and came up with another counter offer that was close enough to what I needed for me to take a closer look. As it turned out, after having my mechanic look it over I walked away anyways, but it showed me that they always leave room to deal. This gave me the confidence to be stronger with the dealer I eventually got my EX from, at the price I wanted.

Exactly- it's just a car- they're everywhere. Nothing makes the one you could be looking at special, no matter what the guy says. I've gone into every deal thinking like that and ready to walk away.

Not really nagging, just perspective- a lot of people lately have been having problems financially, and I'm sure some of them are on the forum, or have family in that predicament. They could have turned it in and had it repo'd, but it doesn't mean that they're all 'deadbeats'. Just need to be careful on some stuff like that, gets touchy when someone has gone through it, or knows someone who did. Maybe not the most humorous topic.

I know a guy that I classify as a deadbeat- he stays at home and chooses not to work at all so he doesn't have to pay his child support- and owes about $18,000 to his kid. That's a deadbeat...

Let me just clarify that the latest Black Explorer I'm looking at (which I just found yesterday) is NOT a repo. It's simply a sale in a used car dealership.

So as to not confuse everyone, I have these pending right now (both no accidents and 2 previous owners):

1. '03 Explorer @ 72K miles - asking price is $10,500, but the guy dropped it to $9,500 so far. Has everything I want except leather. I could see about negotiating down further.

2. '04 Explorer @ 87K miles - asking price is $9,999 which I'm actually gonna see tomorrow after work. Has everything I want and leather. I will see the room for negotiation tomorrow and Sat.

Which one is a better deal? My gut tells me the '04 :) And what is each worth realistically?

You'll know which is better when you drive them. I believe '04 was when AdvanceTrac became available, that might be enough to sway most people to an '04.

id head towards the 04, its newer and has the leather you want (which i love btw!!).

Either way its a crap shoot. I'd bet on the '04 though just because its newer.

Very well may be that Explorers are higher priced by me, but Detroit is also one of the biggest hit areas with our current economic conditions, along with many other spots in the country. Hence, I would hope vehicles would sell for less there. The northeast where I live is quite costly so everything is much higher - home, cars/trucks, taxes etc.

After reading these post I was thinking a 2005 Ford Explorer EB with 82000, heated leather seats and mirrors, pretty much has everything expect DVD that is in my area is price too high. The dealer internet price is $14,400 which I think is pretty high. I was thinking maybe in the $11,000(out the door) range around this.

When I contact the dealer for this, he stated that the vehicle is going to the auction the next day. 1day or so later the contacted me and said that the vehicle is still avaliable. I think this vehicle has been sitting for a while if they were going to send it to an auction....<<this is my guess because I dont think a dealer will send a vehicle off to auction if it wasn't there too long.

Do you think my offer is going to be too low, too high or just right?

I'd offer $10,000 and see how willing they are to deal. I would also have it checked over very thoroughly. There may be a good reason it hasn't sold. When I first started shopping for mine I started looking quite a while before I had the cash ready to buy, mainly just to see what was out there. I found a few that were for sale in December, that were still sitting on the lot in February. This definitely made me have to pause and wonder why no one could make a deal for what seemed like good vehicles.

I agree- the only thing that p's me off is he only tossed out the "She's goin' to the auction!!" to get you in to buy it. I'd knock $500 off just for that charade. No dealer that has an interested party in an SUV on their lot is going to send it to auction to sell for half price.

That looks like a nice Ex though- I like the color combination...

Also agree on the AdvanceTrac- if it's got it, it goes to the front of the line... :)

Thank you da2962 and Joe Dirt.

I should have figured he was trying to pull that but I never thought a dealer would even say that if it wasn't true. Thank once again :)

Oh and yes it has the AdvanceTrac.
