My tranny seems to not like to upshift from 3rd to 4th at 55MPH. It will do it. But somtimes I have to play with the pedal with my foot to get it to upshift. Only happens around 55mph,. Is this like a bad shift point for the A4LD tranny? Tranny shifts fine otherwise, no slippage, no problems. It was flushed about 3K miles ago. It has done this since I got it 4K miles ago.

while there are a number of possibles for a 3-4 shift problem in the A4LD, high on the list is a plugged or partially plugged 3-4 solenoid screen. It is a repair you can do yourself at home with the trannie safely in the car... you just have to drop the pan ane remove the valve body....

Since the 3-4 shift is EEC-IV controlled, I would start by checking the EEC-IV system and the 3-4 shift solenoid wiring. Bad data from a TPS, for example, could cause the computer to not want to shift from 3 to 4.

Brain... after I discovered what FORD wanted for the "NEW IMPROVED" 3-4 shift solenoid, I bought an aftermarket one... sure enough, no screen.

It does up shift. It's not really consistant. Sometimes it's fine. Other times I need to just press the pedal down a little then lift off of it quick & it up shifts. And it's only around 55mph. All other aspects work fine. I pulled codes when I got it & it's clean.

I'm sticking with my original theory of the partially plugged 3-4 solenoid.

If my X sits for a couple days.. it does this..

Now thats a thinker.

i have this exact same problem in my 91 a4ld
only a 3-4 shift above 50 mph
and i have to play with the gas pedal to get it to shift sometimes
ive gotten used to it but it is kinda annoying sometimes

My question..Is it a problem, or is it the nature of this tranny? Maybe 50-55 just isn't a good shift point for the 3-4 upshift?

ive never had a problem with it so it might be a problem.

No, it's not just the nature of the trans, something's wrong. Since the throttle position affects how it shifts, I would take Mr Shorty's suggestion and check the TPS output first, and then the vacuum modulator for proper operation..... Simply because they're easy to check. :) Then I'd look at the 3-4 shift solenoid.
