Whats up guys, I've been lookin for a jeep to restore for a while and I think i've finally come across one. Its a 71 CJ5, its got the dana 44 rear end and the dana 27 closed knuckle front end(why did they even make this??) T14 3spd transmission, and dana/spicer 18 transfercase, its also got the buick "dauntless" V6. The only rust is on the front bumper and the drivers side rocker panel. so heres my question, what should i look for when i go back, like mechanically, physically, structurally??? its been sittin for like a year, it ran when the guy parked it at his house. He only wants $600 for it, but he said he'd take some off the price since im gonna have to get it running. do yall think its worth the price???

thanx, Chris

you cant refuse 600 offer him 400 and take it even if ya have to pay 600 for it. take off the oil cap and look for grime in the engine. and take out the dipstick to see if the oil smells burnt. check the fluids, make sure the t-case and tranny work right. if you can get it runnin great! hell i wish i could find a CJ around here for 600 but i think i may pick up an '85 BII for 500.

I would definately get it. I would still just look at obvious problem spots, maybe take it for a test drive aroung the block.

jeep

I agree, you can't lose for 600 bucks.

california prices

I looked at a jeep that had the rear shocks hanging from the rear axle and many other issues and the guy is asking $5k for it.

Of course it doesn't have any rust cause cars don't rust much here.:)

go for it. even if you pay the $600, its worth it. the closed-knuckle front is crap. but, who cares? you paid $600 for it! 44 rear is great, T14 is plenty stout for the Buick V6, and the dana 18 (similar to the 20 used in other jeeps, and early bronco's) is damn near indestructible in a light/low H.P. rig. good ole gear drive, no stupid chains and no aluminum housing, and a fixed yoke. spring-over it, ad 35's, and sawzall off any rusted spots (or anything else you dont need).
