I have heard a lot of talk about a common ford power steering noise. When I am going along on the road, I hear a whine coming from the front of the X. If I thottle up then right back down, the exhaust noise covers it up for a bit but when the engine then lows RPMs b/c I let off the thottle, it is gone. More throttle and it is back. Is this the common noise I have heard so much about?

I had a similar problem and solved it with a switch to synthetic power steering fluid.

Good luck... keep us posted

It has been there for as long as I have had it. It hasn't seen to be a problem but I just wanted to have it identified and clear any doubt that it might be causing harm.

is it kind of a choppy whine? i have something similar to what your describing but mine does it if it your turning or going straight, as long as its i'm going pretty slow. it may do it at faster speeds, just can't hear it. i wouldn't have thought it was power steering, but i guess it could well be.

I get an odd sound like that too. If I let off the gas its fine, go to accelerate, and the whine comes. Interested to find out what this soud is.

Mine has done it since I bought it new. It has gotten a little louder, but at 230,000 miles I'm not complaining (a lot anyway). I have changed the fluid, just put new standard fluid, but that didn't make a change.

I will try the synthetic idea this weekend. It's a very annoying sound!

Keep us updated if it works.

My guess would be the pump is sucking air through a bad seal. Is the fluid foamy? If so, it's getting air. The teflon seal at the res. on the pressure side is usually what goes. You can get a new hose for about $25. Can't buy the seal alone. LOL

My system started leaking so I replaced the high pressure hose and all the O rings 2 weeks ago. The noise is still there, but no more leak. No foam either.
