'99 XLT
Hi. I recently purchased a '99 Explorer XLT. Since I purchased it, I've noticed a fairly loud whine coming from the PS pump whenever the steering wheel is turned in either direction. I've checked the fluid and it's good. Has anyone experienced this or is it possibly a normal thing with the Explorer?

I cured that noise on my '99 by switching to synthetic PS fluis.

Good luck.....

Ford's power steering pumps are notoriousy loud, just like they are known for using undersize oil pumps.

another option is to use a power steering additive like slick 50, which helps substantially

I have noticed on mine, especially when cold that the steering is getting a little stiff, which to me means a new rack may not be far off. Synthetic oil might be a good way to go first though.

I wouldn't hit a wild dog in the ass with a Slick 50 product.

That's good. And why not exactly?

Its worthless snake oil. Search the web for the lawsuits against it.

i read that it blocks oil passages. and clogs the oil filter prematurely.

Thanks. I guess my project for next week will be to drain my P/S fluid and replace it with some synthetic. Not to open a new can of worms, but which synthetic product would you guys recommend?

Rick
