I recently picked up a BW4406 manual transfer case from another member here - it was sort of on a whim. After reading more about the speedometer issue I went out and took a closer look.

My Ex is a 1997 5.0 AWD. Will my current speed sensor connect to this transfer case, and will my speedo work properly? From what I can tell, this tcase has the correct drive gear setup to make this all work.

Here's a photo inside the hole on the tcase output shaft.

Thanks in advance!

The transfer case you are getting needs to be from a 97 or 98 ONLY. It has the right vss sensor on the tailshaft.

On a side note I run an 02 case converted to rear vss. I used the tailshaft parts from an 98 expedition and took my output shaft and had it drilled at the machine shop. Its a lot of work but can be done.

This case is from a 98. Some of the posts about the 4406 swap didn't seem to agree on whether the cases simply had the correct tailshaft housing, or whether the proper gear was on the actual tailshaft.

To summarize, if this case is from a 98, AND has a visible speedo gear, I'm golden, correct? My existing VSS will simply plug in and my speedo wil work (assuming the proper driven gear, of course).

You should be good to go. As long as it has the same vss sensor, it is the same.
