Is Your A/C Really Cold on Lo temp or Max A/C Setting ?

This is the start of our summer season and first hot temp use of my 2012 Explorer. In two weeks I'm taking a road trip with my family to Florida and the Southeast U.S. and I am a bit concerned of my a/c temp output.

My air conditioner has never felt really cold on the lowest temp, it is cool and it will keep the truck cool at my favourite temp of 23 degrees celsius , but the fan seems to run on the high side for long periods of time in auto mode at that temp setting which isn't a very low temp. But I just don't find the air all that cold at lower temp settings when I switch it to max a/c or Lo temp when I first get into the truck. I recently drove my sister's 2011 Ford Edge and it has that very cold temp feeling at the Low temp setting which my truck doesn't exhibit. My 10 year old Honda also feels colder though it doesn't have auto temp controls.

I am going to get my dealer to check it before my trip but I was wondering if others get that really cold air flow at low temp settings.

thanks for any replies.

Your correct that some of the vehicles are not getting down to as cold as they should be because Im experiencing the same.

Im in Goodyear AZ and its 100-111F all week, the Ex couldn't keep up even on MAX A/C while doing 80MPH on the I10 Freeway.

Mine is at Rodeo Ford in Goodyear right now for that infamous APIM replacement and the A/C issue you described.

The loaner vehicle is a 2011 Mercury Marquis, its way colder even in this heat.

Thanks for the reply, I was hesitating taking it into the dealer as I wasn't sure if this was an issue or not , or if all Explorers were the same. But I will now book an appointment and have it checked out based on the replies. Hopefully they find a reason for it. If your dealer finds a way to improve the operation of the a/c please post your results. Thanks

Mine is pretty good I think! In really hot weather, over 95 and humid it takes a while to cool down. I put it on 69 (lol) and also recirculate and before too long it starts to cool down. Of course I try and get the heat out of the car first by driving with windows down for 69 seconds or so. :D

Dude you need to buy the wife some flowers :smokinfro

Max A/C cools to the same temperature as Normal A/C. Max A/C doesn't stand for maximum temperature. It's stands for maximum efficiency. It is simply just recirculation mode that re-cools the cabin air so it doesn't have to work as hard as pulling in air from the outside.

haha thanks cory. so many quotes!

i actually tooksome advice from here and adjusted "my temp" to 70F and it cooled much quicker than just hitting maxAC. I would suggest this to anyone trying to find an immediate solution. This summer is gonna cook some of us!...
You’re very welcome, jcerrion! haha

I’m glad you’re not “cooking” anymore. :D

I have not tried MyTemp yet (just got the rig 6 days ago)...
Do you have any news on your experiments, RonJrSVCMGR? :)

I appreciate you keeping us in the loop, Sgt1411; drop me a line via PM and I’ll lend a hand.

That sounds great, JFUSION; I’m confident the dealer will take care of you.

Oh jeez, don't encourage him! :D
Let’s just write it off to the heat, VinceL. LOL

Thanks for sharing, gdecamp!

You’re right, briwayjones. The following can be found in the 2011MY Explorer Owner Guide 4th Printing on page 61:

“8. MAX A/C (if equipped): Distributes recirculated air through the instrument panel vents to cool the vehicle. This re-cooling of the interior air is more economical and efficient than normal A/C mode. Recirculated air may also help reduce undesirable odors from entering the vehicle. Press the MAX A/C button again for normal A/C operation.”

Thanks Cory

The guys at Rodeo Ford in Goodyear AZ are excellent and they are all over it.

I always look for the dealership that has all police vehicles being serviced, and Rodeo has all the AZ DPS vehicles in their service center.

Rodeo Ford is a great dealership.

I took my truck in today to have the a/c checked. They said there was an update for the HVAC system and had it performed. It seems to be a bit cooler after the update, maybe 5 degrees ?, it still isn't that real strong cold temp that I've had in other vehicles but it seems to be working a bit better, the fan speed seems to slow down sooner and not have to run as strong as it did before taking it in. I'll put it through a real good test in the next 2 weeks running through the US southeast.

Thanks Cory

You got it, Sgt1411! I’m glad to hear they have you covered. :)

Thanks for the update, JFUSION; be sure to pop in and post the details!

My center outlet temp is consistently 7-13 degrees warmer (47-53, I have a digital thermometer in my center vent) than all of the other vehicles I've checked, including another '14 and '17 Explorer. Fusion, M5, Armada, F150. Regardless of ambient being mid 90s, other vehicles were right around 40. Autonation Ford Katy service is worthless and repeatedly said this was normal operation. Charge is good, me and a buddy with some gauges verified that it's holding a proper pressure, so there's something else making the system operate inconsistently. Cabin filter is new, condenser looks free of debris. Highway driving yesterday in the mid 80s, it was only 50 from the center vent. I was comfortable, but the point is that's 10deg warmer than it should be. Not sure what else to do at this point, at least it's getting cooler soon.

Does the temperature change when set to Max A/C? I just read an old post of mine mentioning the temperature bottomed out at 39 F when idling on the 2014 MKT I had at the time.

I never use Max Ac as I always have recirculate on. Doesn't Max AC just switch to recirc and put the fan on High? I wonder if the temp blend door isn't fully closed and is letting some hot air past it into the vents.

I need some time with this guy, seems to know his stuff

I think you're right about the recirc part. I've never used Max A/C or Recirc.
