I have a 96 Ford Explorer 4.0, it has about 350,000 miles. It still run very well, my problem is I just swaped out the transmission this weekend. It shifts well at lower speeds, but, when I reach speeds of 55 mph, the rpms jumps to 3000 rpms and stays there which is way too high. You can hear the engine raise very high. Does anyone have an idea as to what could be the cause?

Did you flush the cooler & lines prior to swapping transmissions? Was the filter replaced? Did you use a rebuilt torque converter? What kind of fluid did you use? Your other thread was deleted because only one thread is allowed on the same topic.

We did flush the cooler & lines prior to swapping trans. The filter replaced, I used the same torque converter, Now for the fluid I had a guy that could not speck very good english put the trans in. When I got to his house, he had already put some trans fluid in the trans. We were still about 3qs lower when I got there. I brought type F, Question, they have this muti trans fluid it is suppose to be for all trans, I'm thinking he may have used some of this stuff, have you heard of it. And if he did, would that cause the trans to fail.

You have several problems now. Never reuse an old torque converter. It will retain junk from the old transmission that failed. Never use type F fluid in an electronic transmission. Remove the transmission, flush the lines, install a rebuilt torque converter, replace the filter in the transmission, and try to remove as much type F fluid as possible. Install Mercon V fluid. Lubegard additive might be a good idea to add as well. You might have to adjust the bands at the end. Don't continue to drive it the way it is.

Transmission

Ok tell me if I'm wrong or not, The Ford Dealership told me to use type F for Ford. Is that not right, because I got the trans fluid that I use from the Ford dealership.

Transmission

Got a small problem, I just drove my truck about 700 miles from AR going back to VA. I stop in NC, to rest for the night, Should I get the trans flashed in the morning before leaving for VA, or what would be your advise.
