I have a 94 Ford Explorer 4x4 automatic trannie 200,000 miles on truck. We did a trannie flush last summer.

The sensor right near the breather called MAF or MASS went out while my husband was at work. He drove it home 35 miles with the truck throwing a fit. It chugged and leaped and tried to hold back but he just put the petal to the metal. By time he got home the truck was upset. We had a mechanic fix the problem and everything seemed back to normal. Then a couple of weeks later he says he has noticed the truck wont shift into OD between 45 - 55 mph. Sometimes you have to go 60 - 65 and maybe it will shift. Then there are other times it shifts fine. He said yesterday it never shifted into OD and it sucked a lot of gas :(

Do you think it could be another sensor gone bad because he whipped it's butt all the way home with that bad sensor. We weren't having any problems with the trannie before that dumb drive:rant: he did.

Please help! He can drive me crazy over this truck and everything he thinks is wrong with it.

First generation Explorers won't give a flashing Overdrive light, as there is no overdrive light... Just a selector in the gear indicator area that tells you you're in Overdrive.

Have the codes pulled, if it's running that hard it's GOT to have some codes stored.

Do you happen to know how many miles are on the transmission? If it's original, it may slowly be dying and need replacement soon. But if it's been rebuilt by the previous owner, it'll help diagnose where the problem may lie.

There is a "no check engine light on" . I dont know if it is a original trannie or not. Like I said it started to not shift into overdrive after my husband drove it 35 miles with either the MAF or MASS sensor out. We replaced the sensor and now it is not shifting right. Could it be a sensor? Could someone still pull up codes on the trannie even though there isn't a check engine light on?. I'm surprised there is any sensors working right after that little trip. :dunno:

Yes, it could be a sensor. Yes someone can pull codes even though the check engine light isn't on (if there are no codes stored, you'll get 111 pass codes). 1st step in testing any sensor is to pull codes. Some claim that scanners and code readers are easier to use, but all that is required to get codes from your '94 is a paper clip. Go to the EEC-IV forum and read the stickies for instructions.
