I'm the guy looking at the 1995 Explorer XLT I was reading other posts on other sites about this truck. My father in law put the wet blanket on this by saying the transmissions were junk in the Fords. Than I hit the books on this and found out that some of them are and some are not. Look I like this truck but if it has a bad trans id rather walk away. Any info onthis would help.

the first gens were known for the transmission issues. The ones after '94 are pretty decent. Of coarse you'll run into the couple people who say the transmissions didn't last long - but with proper maitnance, even the crappiest transmission can last a good while.

You rarely hear from people that have had no problems with trannys.
Imagine a post such as: I have 98K miles on my Ex and my tranny is Fine, should I be worried? as said above, with proper maintainance trannys can last a long time.
Have the one your looking to buy checked out, if all is well, buy it and have the tranny compleatly serviced (flush, filter, etc) and go from there

take care of it and it will take care of you. we bought my '95 had it had not been taken care of the last 30k or so miles before we got it. and we had to rebuild the tranny at 131k miles. keep it flushed every 30k miles and check it semi-often and you should not have a problem.

The v6 trannies are anemic at best. Even with proper maintainance you will still have a light duty transmission. If the previous owner wasn't hard on it, and it is just going to be a easy driver you may never have problems. I'd still knock on some wood, and maybe buy a rabbits foot.

Just curious
Was there that much diff between the ATs used in the V6s and the AT V8s?

Yes. The 4r70w is a heftier trans. And if it is in need of a rebuild there is no shortage of aftermarket parts to build it near bulletproof. When a 4r/5r55e is rebuilt not much can be upgraded.

Take care of 'em, they should last. 197k on my 95's tranny. Still shifts and behaves like new.

Plus it is basically an AOD :) The Mustang crowd ensures high peformance upgrades.

Tranny

my 1995 XLt have 150K with original Tranny, shift like new.
