These have a ton of issues with the 4x4 module in the passenger kick panel going bad expecially in the 02 year. I'm pretty sure the 4x4 switches are ground signals but I could be wrong. Also make sure you using a multimeter because a test light can send power through it and damage things.

Thanks for the reply and tip about the multimeter and test light.

It's just hard to believe that I have 2 bad 4x4 control modules. It is a possibility, so I'm going to try to find one locally to plug it in and test it before buying a new one and just throwing money at the explorer.

I just had a similar situation with random dying and starting. Mine always pointed to the fuel pump. To make a long story short, my problem was a bad ground at the fuel pump connector. Checking for power at the inertia switch lit a test light and showed 12 volts, but the pump would not run. Putting a load at the inertia switch ( a 12 volt motor I had laying around) was how I finally found the problem. Before you replace an expensive pump (as I did), you might want to check for a bad ground.

The 4X4 switches and radio switches on steering wheel are resistance switches. I hate this because my steering wheel switches are wearing out (with only 80k!) and the volume down is volume UP, and vol up is now preset... Cruise control Coast 1 out of 8~10 times is accelerate!
