I know this subject has been beat to death, but I'm in the process of disassembling the front of my engine to change the tensioner on the jackshaft. I'm not planning on changing the chain, since I don't really want to mess with the timing tool and risk really screwing something up. I know Ford will swear up and down that changing the chain is required, but I'm not so sure. This truck doesn't need to last me another 130,000 miles, only another few years or about 40,000 miles. What do you guys think? For the folks that have done this job, did the original chain have any noticeable stretch compared to the new chain?
If I keep the chain from bouncing with the new tensioner, it should keep it from failing. Now, might the timing be a little off? Yes it could, but I'm not having any performance issues right now.
Any facts or opinions would be very helpful.
