Join me on my Hunt for the Reason of the Dreaded Wobble

Okay interesting things to report.

Picked up the new engine mounts and got those installed yesterday. While I was underneath unbolting the old mounts, I brushed against a bolt for the axle bracket, and it rattled:eek: It was loose enough for me to turn it with me mits. So I cranked that back in place as well as the other one on that frame rail, and it too tightened up right much.

So between the new mounts and tightening those bolts, I eliminated about 80% of the sway. Those two loose bolts have really been on my mind though, and I intend on checking the rest of them once the snow clears.

I am also considering ordering a new transmission mount, as that one is still the factory rubber terd.

That is good news. Sounds like you may have nailed it but I figured you had already checked those when you checked RA bushings and such.

Lets hope the holes in the brackets haven't elongated themselves. Might be a good idea to slap some blue loctite on them.

Kind of forgot about this thread:D

Latest thing that I have done was replace the leaf springs. The pair I had I'd only ever replaced the front bushing in, and left the factory rubber one on the back. And since there were one or two flat spots, I figured I might as well try some new leafs since I already bought a complete Energy Suspension bushing kit for my Explorer anyways.

So I found a local junkyard and was able to get a pair of leafs off a 91 for $60. They were in great shape, so I burned the bushings out of those, as well as the bushings in the frame at the rear of the Explorer. Those were factory rubber also.

Got all those replaced, and figured I'd do the front swaybar bushings too since I already had it apart. However, I have the Warrior disconnects, and those bushings are designed differently than the stock bushings, so my Energy Suspension bushings won't fit:mad:

I've always hated the Warrior discos, so I am thinking I might go back to the junkyard and yank the sway bar links off that 91:D

I'm so eager to drive it now and see if there has been any difference made.....

your running big tires have you checked to see there ballanced. when you went wheelen you may have thrown some weights and that will couse the shake and wobble :salute:

I've been driving the Explorer the last couple weeks, and I am happy to say that everything is back to normal:thumbsup::D

Once I got the new leafs in and took it for a spin, I had about 98% of the sway eliminated. There was still a tad left, but it was only really noticeable when I had passengers with me.

After that, I put some new coils in which actually didn't help any. So in a last ditch effort to destroy the Sway Monster, I had some new tires put on. Mickey Thompson MTZs.

BOOM! Sway is gone:shoot:

They were a fair price and the sidewall is thicker than it was on my old tires. Now it drives like it always has.
