Hello, I hope this is the right way to start this.
I wanted to just get the word out about a problem I hopefully fixed on my 98 Explorer 4.0SOHC. The truck would crank but not start. This would happen every now and then lately, I would wait a little and then it would start. Then today it just quit. I thought that since it would crank and not start, it was fuel related. However, after checking everything fuel related with my shade tree mechanic brother-in-law, nothing. We've replaced a lot of parts on this truck to begin with over the years. We got a lead to what it may be, the PATS, from a mechanic who replaced the lower ball joints for the 2nd or 3rd time. So after researching online and, especially this site, it was looking like the symptoms of the PATS(passive anti-theft system) however the only symptom missing was the flashing red anti-theft light while cranking. We were fed up and about to give in and send it off to the dealer and kiss my money good-bye. But after looking into it a little more, someone on this site mentioned checking the power distribution box relays.
Switched relays around and gave them a little tap and it started first crank. Hope this was the real fix and thanks for the help. Hope this site sticks around until my truck finally heads to the junkyard.
