Just bought truck - 4.6L won't start...

I have heard that the Mustang and Explorer engines are the same, minus block material, mounts and the Stang has +21HP.

Has anyone done this swap? Where do the 21 ponies come from? Would my truck see the increased HP, or would it be dialed back down by the PCM?

What am I looking for with the valve covers off?

-Thanks!

Not sure, my guess is maybe cam profile, exhaust manifolds, exhaust system, PCM tune.

You can see the front cam gear and timing chains. Look down the front cover and see if anything looks missing, broken or out of place. I am not sure if you can find the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley and line it you to TDC and see if a cam is off.

Is it possible that the ignition timing is off? Not sure with the coil-on-plug, but it's an easy thing to do with the V-6s and the coil pack.

I'm sure it's possible but how do I check ignition timing on this beast?

Ignition timing is PCM controlled. The PCM uses the crankshaft position sensor and camshaft position sensor to determine ignitoin coil and fuel injector firing. They are not adjustable. That being said, if the timing chain jumps, the timing is off.

Ok, is it possible that the other end of the coil-on-plug wire is plugged into the wrong receptacle?

Possible, unlikely. a good wiring diagram should tell you which pins at the PCM each coil goes to.

MAybe the PCM just gave up the ghost and crapped out. That may explain alot. But, you really need to rule out a mechanical problem with a compression test.

Ok, just trying to rule out the easy stuff.
