Today i went to go look at a 92xlt x. It has 159000 miles, 4inch lift and 31inch tires. Well...i bought it. Couldnt resist for $700. I know it has a few problems but not to sure where to go from there.
1) The engine has a loud ticking noise.(sounds like lifter but it really dosent get any louder with higher revs.)
2) the crank pully looks to be a little wobbely? (maybe something to do with the tick as the tick comes front front of engine)
3) has mile marker locking hubs....they sound like something is binding or chattering when turning or in straight line while 4x4 is engaged.
4) ignition tumbler is junk. Goes to on position then use a toggle switch to start truck.

Any help or ides would be greatly appreciated. I bought this truck with hopes of driving it this winter and being able to tear down my 94x and redoing it. Thanks again....

Congrats! but you may want to think twice about making this a daily just now.

That crank pulley doesn't sound good. Ran into that once on a Mercedes. Shops owner decided to take it out for a cruise and ended up destroying the crank. $23,000 to fix @ Merc.

So get that taken care of. At least pull it off and see if there is any permanent damage. Ticking could be a lifter or worn lifter rod. Not hard but time consuming and mildly pricy.

Hub is probably shot. Pull it off and see. Don't worry about the ignition switch right now. those are installed with break off bolts, the head breaks off so you can't remove it. You have to use a small chisel and hammer to remove, then get replacements from Ford.

Hey thanks....exactly how difficult is it to get off. It kinda looks as if the crank pully is new...ish. Its way better looking than the rest of the engine and even better than the one on my 94. As far as the tick...i think ill try some rizlone or marvel mystery oil? I know if all else fails with engine i have an extra one complete sitting in my garage to throw in...if needed.

I would change every fluid first. Oil, tranny, both diffs, coolant, power steering, and flush the brakes.
You have no idea how old/contaminated they really are. you might find that an oil change with sea foam in the crank case, then another oil change after a few temp cycles might do a lot of good.

Congrats on the new ride. I got me a 94 limited a few weeks ago for the same thing. Any chance you have any extra parts you may not need? Lol

Lol im sure when all is said n done there will be some extra parts.
